  1. I don't think it is late blight because it doesn't look like any of the pictures of it that I have seen. It does however, look exactly like every picture of bacterial speck that I have ever seen.
  2. No, It doesn't have flowers that I saw. The grass itself is just all bright purple.
  3. Ever tried this? I am still trying to save my tomato plants and the chemical spray just doesn't seem to be helping enough.
  4. They are in front of the little plaza in Dubois where they have Sarvey's Insurance and Rosy's Bookstore. I think they are beautiful and would love to plant it. Wonder where a good source of it would be.
  5. My mother just tosses eggshells, coffee grounds, and vegetable peelings into a spot in the yard and she gets great soil there and it is full of worms. I never noticed a smell. It decomposes pretty fast once the worms have at it. I have read that some people even dig a hole in the garden, toss scrap food in, and when it fills they do it in another spot. I have two composters that I got free by attending 2 workshops and they work pretty well. In the fall I just rake the leaves to the bottom of my yard and they turn into soil.
  6. I just had a huge harvest of ........tomato leaves that have spots all over them. LOL I do this all the time. That and spray and hope. Plucked off a few green tomatoes that have what suspiciously looks like BER (Blossom End Rot). Oh, the joys of gardening. My bushy plants are looking thinner and thinner every day. The remaining leaves are fresh and green. It is wierd. And they are covered with blossoms and green tomatoes. I don't know how many tomatoes I am going to have in the end. I may have to resort to buying more from a farm than I had planned on.
  7. I don't have the whiteflies on my plants. I just saw them on the clearance plants at the store yesterday. I hope we all get through this season with lots of tomatoes. LOL
  8. I am not sure what my plant's problem was but they all had it. Now I have it solved. Between taking off the affected leaves daily and spraying with first one product and then Daconil they are all healthy looking now (minus quite a few lower leaves LOL) and covered with blossoms and green tomatoes. I had to go to three stores to find Daconil and I got the last bottle. I had them check and they have more on back order. I think a lot of people are having problems with tomatoes this year everywhere from what I have read. Many people have lost all their tomato plants and I really feel for them. I never saw whiteflies before yesterday at a local store. I know it's whiteflies from the descriptions that I have read. A plant was on the clearance shelf and when I moved it to look at it swarms of those things flew out looking like dust at first.
  9. Would this also work for other problems like bacterial spot? That is what I think mine have.
  10. Yes, that is it. Morel. They were so flavorful.
  11. I've seen them too. Thought they were discusting. When I was young our parents taught us the main 3 edible mushrooms to find around here and they were tasty. The best was a rare one. I can't remember the name at the moment but if I saw it written or a picture I would remember. It was growing only in a certain spot under the trees at the edge of our yard. Our yard bordered on forest on all sudes. This mushroom was very hard to find, as it blended perfectly in the woodland groundcover. I never knew how lucky we were then to have it. It was shaped really funny and pointed at the top. Wish I had some now fried in butter on homemade bread. MMMMM
  12. I am a member of the yahoo group tomatomania and there is a wealth of information there. Many gardeners are having problems with their tomatoes this year. You can learn a lot from that group and it is very interesting. They are a very friendly group from all over the US.
  13. Last year they left my garden alone until the tomatoes started to ripen. Then it was a war. Me against them as they ate all my tomatoes as soon as they started to ripen. I can't remember who won but I remember the misery. I felt llike that comedian in the movie trying to get rid of critters on the golf course. I even picked a bunch of green tomatoes and put them inside to ripen so they couldn't get them.
  14. You have my sympathy. At the beginning of this season I tried planting in my garden and went through about a dozen tomato plants, squash, and peppers. I gave up the battle and started container gardening. Couldn't handle the frustration and I don't have the money, brains, or time to fight with the wildlife.
  15. Same problem here plus squirells, deer, and rabbits and I live in town! So this year almost everything is on my deck and doing great. When the tomatoes start to get ripe I am putting birdseed out for the squirrels in the yard so hopefully they won't go on the deck and eat tomatoes. It makes me irritated that I can't use my yard to garden.
  16. Traitor! LOL How can anyone not love tomatoes? They are so tasty they should be in the fruit AND vegetable groups.
  17. I hope it helps your neighbor's tomatoes. Mine are looking great now. I pinched off the bad leaves and put more newspaper under some. It seems to help because it keeps the soil off the leaves. I was thinking while I did this how depressing it would be if something killed all my plants. There is so much that can go wrong no matter how much we try to learn and do the right things gardening.
  18. My mother has great blackberries every year and has never done a thing to encourage this. They are growing all around a huge group of wild grapes. It sounds strange, but would there be something about the grapes contributing to the soil or attracting beneficial insects? Just a thought.
  19. Petee, It's funny that you said that because I just got the same idea a few days ago and started to do that. I wish I had done it with all the plants, and sooner. I started it to cut down on weeds, not knowing that it might help prevent other problems too. I am going to get out there tomorrow and add newspaper to the other plants. Brenda
  20. Junk, Thanks for the great website info! I think my plants either have early blight or bacterial speck, both of which are worsened by all this rain.
  21. Does anyone know what would cause the lower leaves to get black spots, turn yellow, and then the leaves die? This is happening to many of my tomato plants. There is no sign of bugs. The rest of the plant looks healthy and I snipped the bad leaves off. Will it spread to the rest of the plant anyways and what can I do about it?
  22. I am thinking of planting a few tomatoes in old fruit baskets and wondered if I should line them with anything. The baskets are old so I am not worrying about ruining them or anything. I was just wondering if the plants would grow better if I lined the baskets with garbage bags. And if so, should the bags be white or black to keep the temperature of the soil around the roots down?
  23. I saw a full sized buck in my neighbors yard on highland street yesterday. Between the deer, rabbits, groundhogs, chipmunks, and squirrels in my yard maybe I should just give up and throw out a salt-block, buy some bird seed and nuts and become a wildlife photogropher. LOL The tomato plants, etc on my deck are doing great. Glad of that anyways.
  24. Are those peppers or potatoes? Whichever, looks good!
