  1. Born, We agree the Cemetery shouldn't be like this and that is what we are working toward. Have you been able to contact anyone from the Society to see what might be able to be done? Thanks
  2. Thanks Madre, all donations of time, money, and equipment are appreciated... although space is a concern for equipment
  3. Crazy, There will be someone there after two, maybe not the whole group but at least stop by and look around, you never know what you might find!
  4. That's a big problem we have, equipment. Whether it's an individuals or the cemetery's, those stones are unforgiving! I know it's a little late but thank you for caring for what you did to get it to where we are now...
  5. Check out www.findagrave.com, type in Rumberger in the search block and see all the stones
  6. Saturday, 9am, park in the Home Health parking lot in the back of the Cemetery. can get there by going thru the Hospital lot or turning off Main St. onto Spring Ave. then Left on Wood St. and left onto Patterson Ave. Can use mowers, weed eaters, rakes, shovels, chain saws, etc.... Thanks!
  7. Actually, Rumbarger was started as a private Cemetery and when the owners "left" guess what? All the money was gone too which means we were / are left with nothing for perpetual care ! Guess that is why current Pennsylvania Cemetery Law requires a Cemetery that is going to sell lots ( remember, older cemeteries are not grandfathered into this ) to have $250,000 in escrow for perpetual care. One of the reasons we will not be selling lots in Rumbarger! So much to talk about! TO, the Main St. wall is on the agenda but even the drawings take money... not making excuses though. Want to widen the entrance which I'm sure will involve Penndot. If we excavate behind the current wall, are there people buried there? Lots of questions to answer. I'm sure projects like that will generate a ton of interest and support but we need to take care of what is there while we are working on them. Leaving for vacation today but hope to see a long lost of GoDuBois'ers signed up for the work day when I get back! Thanks!
  8. Have to say, our Secretary / Historian can't be beat. Lots of people to go thru as families start to branch out and she has info on lots of them. A job for more than one person. Check out www.findagrave.com for info on all the stone in the cemetery. Lots of "Behind the scenes" work being / been done! I'll announce it here, hopefully it doesn't come back to bite me. The DuBois VFW wants to do a re-dedication / James J. Patterson ceremony later in the summer, watch for details!
  9. OK, we'll try it this way...Saturday, July 9th... Who's interested in coming to the "GoDuBois work day at Rumbarger Cemetery" ?
  10. The Society is still new and growing thus going thru growing and learning pains. There are several things we do need. The main focus is cutting and trimming the grass and for that we need people. Due to legal issues that are still being worked thru we cannot "sell" an area, although that might work in the future.Right now our "Adopt-a-Grave" will be simply an area that you agree to care for. If your place of business, work, church, or family wants to volunteer for a "work day", please let us know! Anyone willing to set up a "GoDuBois Rumbarger work day"? The people that are mowing it now are doing a great job with what they have to work with... Remember the cemetery is almost 8 acres with over 1500 stones to trim around with no payroll and at this point very, very few people to mow. We are also trying to set up several Committees to work with our Board of Trustees. This will bring ideas to the table as well as give us a resource of people to help spread the work out. The United way is a definite possibility, just haven't had the time to research it yet, although I do know that even though we are not a Member Agency you can still make your pledge to us. We have three Boy Scouts that are hoping to do their Eagle projects there. We also have plans that we would like to carry out but the lawn care is priority right now so please bear with us and help us where you can! Be part of the solution, not part of the problem!
  11. TO, we plan on using both GoDuBois and the Courier to let everyone know what's going on and what's coming up next, thanks for the interest!
  12. The sign was just a preview of things to come, look for an announcement and updates in the very near future... Please be patient just a little longer!
  13. can anyone make out a sticker or year number on the plate? Not really sure how they did it "back then!
  14. OK, here's wild thought... Is the Flag at Half-Mast? Can't tell but is there someone behind the shrub ( can't tell on my computer ) raising / lowering it? Probably is at Half - Mast, but just a little plot twist!
  15. As a student at the old Central, I remember being haunted a few times but I assure you, the teachers and Headmaster were all very much alive!
  16. Also have to be careful with the stems of the leaves. I've had some laying on the rim of the pot and they tended to rot where they were touching the rim. Beautiful plant though... Good luck!
  17. DuBois Historical society has some info on Major McCreight. DuBois Library also has some of his books. Believe I saw somewhere that he, at one time, had General Custer's pistol.
  18. Always fun to investigate! Might have to wait for the snow to melt unless you really, really want to know!
  19. There was one in the area, don't know if it was based in DuBois though. The "tablet" actually has a post number and reference on it.
  20. Here is a picture of the " Dedication of G. A. R. Circle and Unveiling of Monument and Tablet... May 30, 1928 " at Rumbarger Cemetery. Anyone know any of these people??? I hope this comes thru, 1st time posting a picture. I found the original picture in an old box of "junk" and, after making a few copies, that original now safely resides with the DuBois Area Historical Society.
  21. Parents had one of those years ago! If you ever want to get rid of it, let me know!!!
  22. Although I don't know him, there is a local history teacher that lives out there, Todd Thompson, I believe, is his name. Might be a good point to stare. Or stop by Doverspikes garage, they have been in that area forever!
