  1. When I told my dad that the over 100 year old roundhouse had burned, I saw tears in his eyes....that really was the end of an era when it burned.
  2. No, its been many years since I lived there.
  3. My dad, now in his 90's worked for the B&O....when I was a kid, that was the railroad here....over where Rescar is now, was the B&O, and before that, according to my dad, it was The Great Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad.....once B&O and C&O merged to form Chessie System, my dad decided it was time to retire. He was a 'B&O' man through and through. I think dad said that the tunnels were designated by numbers more than names, but I could be wrong.
  4. All part of the Van Tassel property. I love that big old house.
  5. Then I guess bringing a little tick repellent may be in order......weeds usually equals a tick or two.....sometimes.
  6. The Sabula Tunnel still looks nice too. The lake looks so nice in autumn....the first house I lived in as a kid was on that lake.....I've always like Sabula. Shot these last fall.....
  7. I grew up on Rainbow Drive, off of Hillcrest, and there used to be an old trail that led down to the tunnel, and we'd go there and fossil hunt. When my 8th grade science teacher got wind of the fossils, she organized the day trip for everyone. It was great. I may have to go up and park and walk back the old tracks maybe...if its not too grown over, just to see the change....for better or worse....
  8. Is that the old tunnel, that sits down below Hillcrest Drive? The track crossing was at the foot of where S. Third became Hillcrest.... That used to be one heck of an area for fossil studies for kids. The natural shale was great for them. We used to find tons of em! In fact, when I was in the 8th grade, our science teacher, took us all on a field trip to the tunnel, for a fossil hunt on the shale hills!
  9. I made up a batch of this today, and ran a load, and all I can say is: HOLY *&!
  10. I think that most of the ingredients we mention on these threads, can be ordered on line.....I know Fels can, as well as Zote...and I'm sure that the castile soaps can too...I've been hunting them myself, with no luck either!
  11. Most people think they can only use bread machine mixes in their bread machines...not so! I did some experimentation, and came up with this one, that really works great in my machine, and it might for yours too. It produces beautiful bread every time! Just make sure you use the flour I mention, it produces the very best results. This will work in a 1.5 to 2lb machine 1 1/4 cup liquid: I break it down like this: 1/3 cup canned evaporated milk, then the rest is very warm water. Total should be 1 1/4 cup. 1 tbsp. butter, softened 1 tbsp. organic sugar 1 tsp. sea salt 3 cups of King Arthur Unbleached Bread Flour 1 .25 ounce pkg. of Rapid Rise yeast. Place all the ingredients in the machine, starting with the liquids, then butter, then flour and other dry ingredients. OR put the ingredients in the machine as your machine's manufacturer suggests, then use your 'white bread' setting, or "basic" setting, and press start! Comes out great every time..... When you consider that the price of a loaf of bread is just awful....put that bread machine to work!!!! There are TONS of great scratch recipes for bread machines on line too!!!
  12. Just cover to top of soap, like maybe an inch above the top of the soap...... I've got a couple others to post, I'm now making my own bath and body soaps too! Oh and by the way, did ya all know you buy Fels Naptha 'pre-grated' on line? Yup. http://www.soapsgonebuy.com/category_s/2.htm I'm sure there are other sites that have the pre grated Fels, but if you don't want to bust a knuckle.......Me I don't mind, I use the cheese grater, its good exercise!
  13. Hey Steve, how about calling it, Keeping it Clean & Green! Since most of the home brewed cleaning products are kinder to the environment....
  14. Reynoldsville Bilo is out of Fels...unless they restock it tonight...I bought the last two today..... *grin* I think I'm going to stop at the Dollar General by Kmart tomorrow and see if they have any Zote left.....sounds like good stuff from what I've read.
  15. It should, I make three batches at a time, and it keeps just fine. Just use a nice plastic container with a good lid. Just so it stays nice and dry.
  16. I'm glad everyone is liking the stuff.....the smell is really so fresh, and I do like how it makes clothes smell like the dried outside, even after they come out of the drier! Tomorrow is my day to make up a batch or two of powder, I usually make double batches and full a big old plastic tub with the powder. The little goes a long way really works with this stuff!
  17. Remember, the suds don't get the clothes clean..but when you buy commercial laundry soap, it makes all kinds of suds, it makes you think you're getting those clothes sooo clean...nope, its not the suds, its the surfactants, and all the other stuff, not the suds... Yepper, 1 tablespoon, and yes you can adjust if you feel a need to see at least 'some' suds. If you make the liquid version, you use 1 cup.
  18. Snellma, are you going to Harris Teeters????? I soo miss Harris Teeters!!!
  19. I found every ingredient for the laundry soap at Martino's in Brockway. They had em all.
  20. I have all those ingredients on hand right now....might just have to give that one a try...my only concern, is how to get one cup of it, into the small capacity dispenser on my HE machine.....guess I'll just adjust for that. I only hope it doesn't make the clothing smell like vinegar, or my hubby will pitch a fit!!
  21. Best window cleaner I've ever used, is the one I make: Take an old Windex spray bottle, or other 32 oz. size spray bottle. (think its 32 oz, maybe more, maybe less) Fill it 1/3 with white vinegar, 1/3 with Parson's Lemon Ammonia, and the rest of the way with hot water. Shiniest glass around with that stuff.
  22. I had a wonderful little mockingbird when I lived on the Outer Banks. He'd sing, and sing, and at the very end, would say: pretty bird, pretty bird, pretty bird! Someone must have called him pretty bird!
  23. Yup that's it. Been circulating on the net for years on tons of sites. I got it from a gal in Alaska when I found it. The Ivory variety makes a little more suds, and I think the Fels variety cleans better.
  24. I think you mean Bergamot. That's what is in Earl Grey.
