Petee
Mums need to be planted where the soil drains well in the winter. They will die if the soil stays soggy when snow melts. Mulch such as a heap of leaves or straw help too but pull it away a couple of inches from the stem when the plant first shows signs of green growth in the spring. Prune them down by half at the end of each month in June, July and August, then allow them to grow till they bloom. Careful deadheading will help keep them nicer for longer although all they are showing is another sparcer second layer of blossoms.
