yada
Can someone help me? I received some tulips as gifts and I'd like to know what to do with the bulbs, and when and how to replant them. Thanks!
Petee
Cut off the flowerheads and stems just as soon as they fade. Keep watering and feeding the leaves just like they're houseplants. They will eventually die off too but the bulbs will be stronger and well fed. Once you have soil that is thawed take them to the garden and plant them underground at three times their height. For example, if the bulb is one inch tall then dig a hole four inches deep. Plant them pointed end up so that there is three inches of soil over top of them. Tulips do not like shallow planting holes or to be planted less than six inches apart.. Add bone meal to the soil in the planting hole to continue to feed the bulbs and leave them alone. They may or may not bloom spring of 2010. If they do come up then give them a hefty feeding of Bulb food. You may want to dig one wide hole at the correct depth and allowing the correct spacing, put down a sheet of smaller chicken wire. add soil to cover the bulbs completely, add another layer of the same chicken wire, then finish filling the hole. It can help stop critters that like to eat bulbs.
