A California teen who has been missing since Jan. 1, is believed to be alive and possibly held captive, a private investigator says. Sixteen-year-old Alinka Castaneda left her family’s home in Carson, California, and was seen “entering an unknown vehicle” at 5 a.m. that day, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. ▫️Alpharetta Police arrest 5 in child exploitation sting
ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety Special Investigations Unit announced the arrests of five and outstanding warrants for two suspects in an undercover child exploitation operation March 29. Police charged Neal Wurtz, 25, Jose Hernandez, 28, Douglas Cropf Jr., 30, and August Rich, 23, with felony use of a computer to entice a child to commit an illegal act. Erick Garcia-Salinas, 34, and the four suspects were also charged with felony criminal attempt to commit child molestation.

Lawsuit claims Clearwater foster family abused children for nearly 30 years
TAMPA, Fla. — A new lawsuit describes claims of mental, physical, and sexual abuse against boys under the care of Clearwater foster parents that date back to 1997. MADISON, Wis. - The defrocked Roman Catholic cardinal who became the face of the church's clergy sex abuse crisis has been charged in Wisconsin with sexually assaulting an 18-year-old man more than 45 years ago, court records show. A criminal complaint filed Friday alleges that Theodore McCarrick, who was removed from the priesthood in 2019 after a Vatican investigation found he had sexually molested adults and children, fondled a man in 1977 while staying at a cabin on Geneva Lake in southeastern Wisconsin.

▫️Operation Steel City Rescue: Joint law enforcement operation locates 13 missing kids, arrests several fugitives
Pueblo law enforcement agencies and the U.S. Marshals Service for the District of Colorado recently combined forces for a three-day operation in southern Colorado to locate missing and endangered children and arrest local fugitives. The Steel City Rescue team says it identified 16 kids who were potentially endangered and located 13 of them. The team also identified 13 sex offender fugitives — of which Taylor said there are more than 1,800 statewide — from the city and county of Pueblo, some of whom were arrested as part of the operation.

▫️18 arrested in sex crimes against a minor child
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. – The Yates County District Attorney reports that 18 people have been indicted for sex trafficking charges from an investigation that started in Horseheads in October of 2022. According to the Yates County District Attorney the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations (NYSP BCI), Horseheads initiated an investigation on October 13, 2022, into Andrew Daugherty of Starkey, New York. The investigation spanned several months and included assistance from members of the BCI across NYSP Troops A, C, and E, 18 people were arrested and charged with various sex offenses alleged to have been committed against a minor child.  As a result of this investigation, the victim was removed from an extremely unsafe environment.

A 32-year-old Casper man was sentenced Thursday to 170 years in prison for possessing and producing child pornography, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming said. Salvador Salas, Jr. was found guilty of one count of possession of child pornography and five counts of production. The court also ordered $132,056 in restitution be paid to the victims to cover the expense of care and treatment, the statement said. On his devices, there was child pornography downloaded from the internet, which featured graphic sexual abuse of prepubescent children, five videos and 47 photographs of the 13-year-old girl, the statement said. Those images depicted Salas sexually abusing her.

▫️Former Children Services worker sent to prison for abusing teen
Kenneth Rummel begged Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Miraldi to change his mind after the judge sent him to prison on Thursday for abusing a teen girl under his care in 2021. The judge sentenced the former Lorain County Children Services caseworker to two years behind bars. Rummel pleaded guilty to a felony child abuse charge in February. The Lorain Police Department filed charges after an investigation into allegations Rummel sexually assaulted the teen while working as a social worker in the Independent Living Unit at Children Services.

April 6, Uvalde Station agents apprehended Jose Lopez Arias, 41, a Guatemalan national, while he attempted to avoid detection near Uvalde. Record checks revealed Lopez Arias was convicted of sexual assault of a minor, in Lexington, Kentucky, in 2014. Lopez Arias was sentenced to 15 years confinement and was most recently deported in 2019.

▫️Coalinga man arrested for allegedly engaging in sexual acts with a minor, police say
COALINGA, Calif.  -- Coalinga Police have arrested a man accused of having sex with a minor. 25-year-old Samuel Krueger was arrested at his home on Coalinga Street near Pacifica Street. Today’s Gospel mentions the following words from Jesus, “You’ll see greater things.” I couldn’t think of better words to begin this 2022-2023 school year. Jesus is always challenging us, presenting us with opportunities, and calling us to adventure. 

God desires more from us. He doesn’t settle for mediocrity. He desires excellence. Yet, we sometimes step back into our comfort zones due to fear. We sometimes aren’t willing to accept a challenge. We sometimes are scared to grow. We sometimes let opportunities pass by us.  

Since our mascot here at DuBois Central Catholic is a cardinal, I’ll use the image of a bird. What is the best way to get a bird to fly? The answer is simple - break its branch. 

The whole point of a Catholic education is to break your branch. It’s to knock you out of your comfort zones. It’s to challenge you with new opportunities and new ways of thinking. A Catholic education demands that you soar to new heights in a variety of ways: humanly, spiritually, psychologically, socially, intellectually, theologically, scientifically, mathematically, athletically, musically, artistically, technologically, and so much more. 

DuBois Central Catholic demands that you accept the challenge to reach new heights. 

A bird, in order to fly, must step out of its nest. It must walk out onto the branch. Even better, it must leave that branch. Only then can a cardinal begin to fly. 

Take a look at our mascot. Does our mascot look like it’s sitting in a nest? Of course not. Does our mascot look like it’s perched on a branch? Of course not. Our mascot is in flight. It has set fear aside. It has left its comfort zone. It’s now on adventure and reaching new heights. 

Jesus repeatedly says throughout the Gospels, “Be not afraid!” Let me translate this phrase with our school mascot in mind - leave the nest, leave the branch, and reach new heights! Only then will we see greater things.

Geneva A. Malewicz, age 103 passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Christ the King Manor on Saturday, April 15, 2023.

Born on October 31, 1919 in Tyler, PA, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Catherine (Brzuszek) Malek.

On July 5, 1941 she married Chester J. Malewicz. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1987.

Before her marriage, Geneva had worked at Sylvania in Emporium, PA. She then worked, and retired from Brockway Glass after many years of service.

Geneva was a member of the former St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church. She was a member, and past president of the Pulaski Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by one daughter (Carol Lewis and her husband Gus of Pittsburgh, PA), two grandchildren (Jonathan Lewis of Erie, PA and Jennifer Palermo and her husband Jaison of Pittsburgh, PA), and three great grandchildren (Elliott and Max Palermo and Alexandria Lewis). 

She was preceded in death by one daughter (Delores "Dolly" Malewicz) on June 5, 2022.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 from 3 PM - 6 PM at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. 

Additional visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 from 10 AM - 11AM from the chapel at Christ the King Manor,  1100 West Long Avenue, DuBois, PA 15801. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 AM from the chapel with Father Matias Quimno as celebrant.

Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery.

William J. Good, age 84 of DuBois, PA died Saturday, April 15, 2023 at his home.

Born on November 8, 1938 in DuBois, PA, he was the son of the late Vincent and Helen (Sovich) Good.

William was a 1957 graduate of Sandy High School.

On June 27, 1964  he married Virginia (Sephalski) Good. She survives.

William was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

He had worked at BF Goodrich and then the Riverside Warehouse, where he worked as a general merchandise foreman, retiring from there after many years of service.

William was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church where he had served as a Eucharistic Minister. William was very active in the St. Michael Polish Festival where he was in charge of the hot dog booth for many years. He was also a member of The Holy Name Society, Pulaski Club,  and the Polish American Veterans. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan and Penn State wrestling and football fan, but especially enjoyed being with his  family.

William is also survived by his children (Julie Hassan and her husband Mike of DuBois, PA and Matthew Good of Erie, PA), grandchildren (Michael Hassan  and his wife Christa of Dormont, PA and Megan Hassan and her fiancé Kristian Larsen of Falls Church, VA), one great granddaughter (Raegan Hassan), and two brothers (John “Jack” Good and Robert Good and his  wife Denise both of DuBois, PA).

He was  preceded in death by one sister (Helen Ann Dillman).

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023 from 4 – 7 PM at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at 10 AM from St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Charles Kaza and Msgr. Richard Siefer as con-celebrants.

Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard.

Robert D. “Bob” Cooper, age 77 of DuBois, PA died Friday, April 14, 2023 at Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital.

Born on April 24, 1945, he was the son of the late Arnold and Dorothy (Slaven) Cooper.
 

Bob graduated from the DuBois Area High School Class of 1963.
 

He enlisted in the United State Navy in 1965 and served two terms from 1967 and 1968 in Danang Vietnam.

On June 14, 1969 he married Pamela Jean Spicher in DuBois, PA.

Bob worked for Penn Flavor Seal, Jeffers Electronic and McDowell Manufacturing all in DuBois, PA, and N.N. Moss Furniture Store in Greenville, PA. He then started his career as an agent for the Prudential Insurance Company in 1972, was first promoted to Sales Manager in the Grove City office in 1974 and then to Sales Manager in the Brookville office where he remained until his retirement in 1988.

Bob attended Roseville Independent Church in Brookville, PA.

His many hobbies included hunting, fishing, fly tying, woodworking and wood carving.

Bob was a volunteer fireman for the Third Ward Hose Company from 1963 – 1969. He was a charter member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Grove City, PA, a member of the Brookville Honor Guard, Post 17 American Legion DuBois, and the Hormtown Rifle and Pistol Club. He was a life member, of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, National Rifle Association and the Sigel Sportsman’s Club.

Bob had a positive attitude and a good sense of humor. His faith made him a champion fighter even after 35 years of significant health issues. He never met a stranger, and had a tender and kind soul. He was a loving and wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Bob loved his family and his Lord Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his wife, two sons (Arnold (Denise) Cooper and Brian (Kelley) Cooper, and four grandchildren (Zachary, Justin, Jayna and Noah Cooper).

Bob was preceded in death by two brothers William and Gregory Cooper.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2023 from 2 PM – 4 PM & 6  PM – 8 PM at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023 at 11 AM from the funeral home with Pastor James Fillhart officiating.

Interment will take place in Morningside Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard.

▫️SJPD Arrests 22 Suspects in Sexual Assaults Warrant Sweep Operation
The San José Police Department Sexual Assault Investigations Unit arrested 22 suspects that had outstanding warrants during an operational sweep in the month of March, 2023. 18 of those arrests were made in a coordinated effort with SJPD Special Operations (Street Crimes, METRO, VCET) and the Bureau of Investigations. Three of these arrests were made outside of San José. All of the suspects are charged with sex crimes ranging from misdemeanor sexual assault to felony cases of sexual assault of a minor and rape. It is possible that there could be additional victims. ▫️Sheriff's Office and U.S Marshals Capture Sexual Predator in Albuquerque
On April 11th, 2023, Bernalillo County Deputies and the U.S. Marshals had a large presence at Elizabeth and Central Ave SE in regards to a fugitive who was on the loose for three days. It all started on April 8th, 2023 when Deputies got reports of a 911 call of an aggravated battery occuring at a residence. When BCSO deputies arrived they found a victim who had been tied up and sexually assualted throughout the day. She also explained that Hunter would make threats of "don't try to run bitch or I'll shoot you," and "you can't out run a bullet."

▫️Violent kidnapping caught on video, LPD rescued victim, police report said
LUBBOCK, Texas — Leandro Garcia, 55, was arrested and accused of aggravated kidnapping, according to a report from the Lubbock Police Department. Online jail records also indicated it was done with the intent of sexual abuse. A witness said he saw Garcia grab the victim and force her into a pickup truck. The witness said he recorded the incident and heard the victim scream. The victim was located inside the residence with facial injuries and dried blood, according to the police report.

▫️Police Searching For Wanted Sex Offender In West Springfield
Antonio Candello, a level 2 sex offender, lied about his living address in West Springfield, police said in a wanted poster. Candello, 53, was convicted of rape and abuse of a child last year, according to the state's sex offender registry. He is currently in violation of his requirement to inform authorities of where he is living. ▫️Greenwood therapy center employee confesses to molesting children
GREENWOOD, Ind. — Victims of alleged sexual abuse by an employee at a Greenwood therapy center were carefully selected to avoid suspicion, a recent to police reportedly revealed. Furthermore, one of the reasons the suspect said he took the job was to prey on children. A document filed in the Johnson County Circuit and Superior Courts show Leomeir Kennedy, identified as a “trans male” in the document, confessed to molesting three children under his care — including two patients at a therapy center for children with autism.

▫️Atlantic City, NJ, Pimp Gets 60 Years For Human Trafficking
