You  might also find some photos of when that track was cut down to 1/4 mile and used for auto racing.  I believe the time frame for that was late '50's to mid '60's.  That use was stopped, according to stories of the day, by complaints about dust and noise by the Maple Avenue Hospital.

During that time frame there were still some people who trained and boarded their horses in the stables there.  I believe the stables were under the grandstands, but old memories can't always be trusted.  It may have been a separate building too.

Thank you !    That is a great help.   I get overwhelmed with the extent of information sometimes----much to record and learn, then put together.  Wish I was age 20 again just to have more time on this earth to get it done....!

If you have complications with rnetzlof's procedures, I can email them to you.  PM me your email address.   I will keep it confidential.

They are in Low, Medium, and Large file sizes.   Approx 1MB, 3+MB, and 11+MB, respectively.

I have them down loaded for 1939, 1958, and 1968 - you would need at least a Yahoo account to receive them.  Gmail might accept greater than 10MB files, but most ISP based email servers will not.

    Thank you !

I will search the Dubois Historical society for actual closeup pictures, if any, inside the area at ground level, etc...…...

"Do you know how I can get the aerial photo ???  Penn pilot ? "

    Yes. www.pennpilot.psu.edu

On that screen, type dubois pa into the "Enter place name..." box, select an era in the "select era" box

Click on one of the red dots which will appear on the map They mark the centers of available photos

When the pop-up appears, do one of: Click on one of the download icons at the bottom of the pop-up or click on the miniature photo. The former gives you a zip file containing the aerial photo, the latter delivers a jpg image,

    Thank you !!

Rumor has it that the horse in question died in or near the stables at the track...………..the photo helps a great deal as many thought the race track went more along Sandy Lick as opposed to being perpendicular to it....

The grave looks much older than the 1930s.   In the mid-1990s, an article was done about it in the local paper, but I have not searched yet---I asked the author of the article recently, but it was too long ago for her to remember any details......

Wasn't there an old fairgrounds and/or race track over in that general vicinity a long time ago?

I think I remember going to a carnival around the area where Martins is presently located back in the 1970's

Yes---the race track was built in 1885---------it was one of the nation's best at the time......

Indeed so. Actuallt, right there on the lot occupied by the Courier-Express. See attached image made by tracing from a 1939 aerial, then superimposing on the latest Google map.

  6. I believe I have the earliest known baseball (base  ball) team in the area now called the DuBois Area Sch. District...……..Penfield ('Pennfield) had a team called the 'Rough & Ready Club' in 1868, and they were scheduling to play the club in Clearfield ('Chinchaclamoose Club') in November of that year at the Clearfield fair grounds...….

Made a call to somebody who's  Uncle played in the 50's.  They think it was called "Beaver Stadium".  I was thinking on the lines of Dubois Vo tech Stadium since the school was in the stadium. They also thought stadium was originally built by the  government Civilian Conservation Corp. Hopefully thats accurate and helpful.

    Thank you !

Yes---it was a 1939-completed project of the WPA......

For the first 6 years it was called "DHS Stadium" by the local paper(1930-35)……….

In the 1940s-50s the local paper nicknamed it the "Beaver Bowl"...…….

Will keep searching.....appreciate your help !

Thank you !!   That is something I need to find out about.   Who might have the info on this?

Will items such as this, be representative of your book content (question is meant in a very positive way)?  If so, I would not rush to publish, but rather look for guidance from a national firm, as you may have something that interests far more than local people (sort of in the "Bathroom Reader" genre).

In preparation to write, what other books are you reading or what other books have influenced you in this pursuit?

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner---------ever since these posts are not listed in general posts, I forget to check....

All things athletic in the period leading up to just before 1890 will be included in the work, as long as it pertains to the 'DuBois Area'.  Certainly any quirky slang of that time will be included as it relates to sports/contests, etc

Thanks for the advice---that is a great idea.      I never find the time or energy I desire as I seem to put most of it into coaching/grandchildren at the moment, so this work looks like it will not be finished until late next year.  It is a challenging topic to begin with, but worth the time,  I feel......

I have not been influenced by any particular book for this topic, and all prior history books written of the DuBois area are of very limited help, with the exception on a few insights of the 'movers & shakers' of that time who pushed for the incredible race track we had, some baseball teams, and the epic fairs held here, etc...

    Must be a misprint

How about an eye of an eagle. Never heard that expression on describing a checkers player though.

I thought that too, but I got a few hints from obscure literature that a 'heagle' has connections to board games in the slang of that era...…….will keep working on it...

  11. Attached is a listing of those names associated with athletics in the DuBois area in the 1880s.

Please feel free to let me know of any information you have on any of these people.  I will include your contribution in the final works (booklet) to be done on the subject about next year.

    Thanks for the photo!

Was this actually taken from a yearbook you have?  What year was this?

I think that would be 1948..........................the mystery is what happened to XC after that year?  It seems there were two meets in 1949, then it abruptly stops in mid-season...?......rumor has it that XC was dead until the 1960s when Sam Richards revived it.....

    What info you looking for.

I believe he coached wrestling and not sure of other sports.

He did coach wrestling, but he coached the XC program in the Fall 1948.   In the middle of the season, after 2 meets,  it seemed to disappear, and possibly never to appear again until the 1960s under  Coach Sam Richards..................not verified yet, but I am very curious as to what happened in 1948
