nails4u2c
Has any one been to Longwood gardens? I am wondering when is the best time to go, what is in the surrounding area of interest and the best place to stay? How long does it take to get there from Brookville? Petee
Rooms are hard to find around that area. Unless you stay right at the hotel near Longwood Gardens you may have to travel 10-15 miles. Take your own food too because the food there is expensive and not really good.
lavender
The Down to Earth Garden Club did a field trip there several years ago. It was wonderful! The website is here so you can pick a season and see what is going on http://www.longwoodgardens.org/ We missed the fountains but there are all over the gardens and must be spectacular when in use. The chain motels are about 10-15 miles down the road. The prices are standard. It takes about 4 1/2 hours if you drive straight through from DuBois. We stayed within walking distance from a mall with chain restaurants so we ate dinner there. The gardens have a cafeteria which has food that is unusual and good. It is upper moderately priced for lunch but worth it. I think the herbs are grown in the gardens. The area is full of revolutionary war history. Chadds Ford is the home of an important battle and Washington's headquarters. The Brandywine River museum with 3 generation of Wyeth art isn't far. We also took a tour of the farm where Andy Wyeth did his painting. They will point out the hill where the Wyeth painting Christina's World was painted. Great area! nails4u2c
Thank you for the great information. If I were to look for chain hotels on-line what is the nearest town or city to search for rooms? I see where Amtrak will take you right to Wilmington Delaware and you can catch a shuttle. That would be fun to leave from Altoona. The fireworks and fountains looks interesting. lavender
Longwood Gardens is in a town called Kennett Square. I think the next nearest town is Chadds Ford or Mendenhall. Here is a place to start looking:http://www.tonsofhotels.com/gardens/pennsylvania/hotels-near-longwood-gardens
nails4u2c
I wanted to thank Lavender and Petee for the information on Longwood Gardens. It was an absolutely beautiful place. We went last Friday, it was rainy all morning, but when we arrived the clouds parted and the sun came out. The flowers loved it, and needless to say... so did we. Boz Scaggs (Steve Miller Band) was playing in the open Air Theater in the evening. The lighted fountains at night were like watching liquid fireworks. I wish I would of taken more pictures of the beautiful conservatory and more of the 40 gardens...but my flower photos are all I have to share. If you ever get the chance visit this beautiful place.
