  1. I think the one at Lowes only comes with one shelf? Did I miss seeing more? The one from Harbor Freight does not have shelves but I think they have some you can buy. I got 2x2s, small L brackets and a roll of vinyl coated 2x4 wire and made them solid around the greenhouse. I think there are twelve total, deep enough to set a flat length wise on them when there are a lot of plants. 54 flats in all and more if I get inventive. If I didi it again I would just run them along the sides and not the back. I don't think much space would be lost.
  2. I'm going to start a new thread so this is easier to find. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47712 Yes, that is the one I have (6x8 ) from Harbor Freight. It's a beast to lug to wherever you want to assemble it, and then there's the directions which are not complete. However, they did e-mail me photos of the places where the directions left off. We drilled over 300 holes and bolted it together on a section of the deck that we built a couple of years ago specifically for the purpose of me having a little greenhouse some day. We are also going to add a sunroom to the basement for heat for the house and so I have a place for the indoor plants over the winter. The one from Lowes doesn't have roof windows to open when the heat gets too high. The one from Harbor Freight is much nicer. Friends gave us a remote digital thermometer from Radio Shack so I have it recording the temperature in the greenhouse. Right now I have the windows and door open to let the air flow through but this spring when it got cold at night and I put the electric heater out there, it made it so much easier to regulate. I could check it in the kitchen and then go out and raise or lower the temp. We made a base of pressure treated 2x4s for it but you could just level it on open ground if you were right on the mark. Otherwise I would pour a concrete apron to rest the sides on, or even a floor. We are going to add two levels of 2x4s under this one in the fall so it will be higher. With all of the base bolted together it will be heavy enough that I don't think anything other than a bona fide tornado will move it.

  4. That's how the new Franklin Street Bathtub bed and the long mound beside it got planted. Last year was the first year we had an excess of money and we wanted to get rid of most of it. We don't like to let money accumulate in the tresury because it belongs to the community, I bought tons of plants from the Lowes sale racks, dragged them to my deck, then was in bed with the Shingles for 6 weeks, then it was getting so late that we had to do a dump and plant just to get them into the ground before the weather got too bad. This spring we were so amazed because it's gorgeous!
  5. You may still have time to delete it and post it in the right topic. We'll still help anyone who gets one. I love mine. Hubby asked me if I want to get the bigger one the other day and I asked if he had a fever! :-)
  6. It's a bugger to set up but if anyone gets one, call us and we'll tell you the tricks.
  7. Ohhhh, that's you! Come on out but let me clean first! I'll have home made ice cream and/or Tiramisu in a few days.
  8. I'm sure there's at least that much and more in the city water and the pool! No problem. You have to do 9 parts water to one part bleach to sanitize anything.
  9. Mine is some sort of a reinforced vinyl that is constructed something like cardboard. It comes with clips to assemble it, but we drilled and bolted it together because this thing is not coming down in my lifetime!! Here's a page that shows both the one I got and the larger one. We rasied ours by setting the base on one layer of 2x4s. I think we are going to raise it on two more layers because it will give me mopre room on the top shelves. I built twelve wood and wire shelves for the old greenohouse and this one is a little shorter so the top shelf is a little tight. My POlaroid died right when I wanted to get this and the Wisteria pictures and I haven't developed the throw away camera yet, but I will post a picture then.
  10. I have a blue one that comes back every year in, of all things, a terra cotta hose pot! The ones safely in the ground die, but this thing, exposed to the worst of temps, has come back for about 8 years now.
  11. I got my 6x8 which is plenty of room when you build in shelves at Harbor Freight. I think it was about $300. They also had a 12 x 15 I think for about $500 which was tall enough to grow hanging baskets. It was way too big for me.
  12. You need BT Mosquito Dunks. Try calling Hanzeleys or Lowes to find them. You just drop one in the barrel and it suffocates the mosquito larvae. The water is still fine to use.
  13. Buying them with blossoms on won't hurt at all but be prepared for some blossom drop if there is transplant shock from a difference in sun, heat, water, night temps, etc. Otherwise it will be just fine. Try to keep it very well watered for the first few days and plant it in the evening if possible. That way it has a night to get a little acclimated before it's subjected to these temps. If a plant has very well (but not root bound) root system, there's no problem with planting them now. Mine are still in their growing containers but will be going out pretty soon.
  14. Miracle Grow for Tomatoes does a better job of growing fruit than regular Miracle Grow but it should still do fine. You can add a TBL of Epsom Salts for Peppers and Tomatoes to make it better.
  15. Yep, I have more and will get them to you. PM me please to make arrangements.
  16. They are an unknown to us but if they croak just let me know. I will pot some up to bigger pots but not all of them. I was doing an inventory in the greenhouse this morning but the heat got too bad and I haven't finished yet. I may be able to do it this evening or tomorrow morning.
  17. I also have a lot of plants left and they are free to anyone who wants them. They are leftover from the plant sale and will just die of old age in my greenhouse. Call 371-3322 or e-mail me at cshenkle@verizon.net.
  18. Peppers need to be spaced about a foot apart for good pollinations. Soil can be mediocre but will probably need amended with compost. Move them every year if possibl to help reduce soil borne problems. Full Sun! Good air circulation. Feed at least weekly with Tomato food full strength (not just regulal Miracle Grow which mostly produces leaves) and a tbl per gallon or plant of Epsom Salts in the water. Water deeply as with tomatoes. Keep fruit picked regularly. If you do not seem to have a lot of bees or other good bus, take an artist's paint brush and go from flower to flower as frequently as possible. We have California Wonder, Crispy Sweet Green/Red which turn red a little earlier and Big Dipper which starts slow but ends with huge sweet green blocky fruits at the sale.
  19. I trained mine up a metal trellis but eventually it took the trellis with it. I laughed because I saw the exact same thing on the one at the Medicine Shoppe. There's no way to get it out without a ladder and a heavy pair of wire cutters. Actually you can tie a rope to a tree, deck, building, and train it up the rope till it gets to the right height. Then chop it off and keep it chopped as it tries to escape. There is regular pruning involved and don't be afraid to do it. You won't be sorry.
  20. They take quite a few years to bloom, so take that time to prune it vigorously and get it to the height and shape you want.
  21. There's one on DuBois Street (the road to Falls Creek?) behind a big brick rental house. It's on the back alley right next to Luther Funeral Home. It goes up the tree and covers it with blooms but when that baby comes down, everyone had better un for cover!
  22. My Polaroid Digital died a couple of weeks ago and I've been using a throw away camera. When I get enough pictures taken I will get a CD to share.
  23. I pruned my daughter's Rhododendron into a tree and so many people commented on it.
  24. Number 5 practically glows with a light of its own!
