  1. I saw this on facebook on a farm and market group. ************************** By Kimberly Bruce This plant is killing songbirds across North America! If you have one or see one with berries, cut off the berries and compost them. Nandina domestica (heavenly bamboo) is from China and so our birds mistake it for a food source. The seeds contain a ton of cyanide and cause a swift and extremely painful death. I cut the berries off my neighbours yesterday, but he said he has already found a few dead birds. Such a simple thing could save hundreds of lives. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3005831/
  2. I am not sure which plant in the garden my wife picked from. I bought about a dozen varieties of peppers this year.. She was going to show me which plant she got this one off of tomorrow.
  3. No I purchased these just outside of Brookville near Stanton
  4. I have many tomatoes this year as well. Although I am a bit disappointed where I bought my tomatoes as I have many which are not the variety I purchased.
  5. I have lots of peppers this year and many are this size and a couple a little bigger.
  6. update on the raised bed i took pics almost every week June 18th
  7. They ate the leaves off of the blueberry bushes. My wife got rid of them after she saw them which was from quite a distance since they were all bunched up.
  8. It was that way for many greenhouses, lots of people starting their own gardens which is good in my opinion for both them and the greenhouses who supply plants.
  9. Planted the raised garden on Monday most of it but I needed tomatoes, cabbage and carrots and got them on Tuesday and planted them. I went with square foot gardening. We will see how it turns out. I added vermiculite to help keep in the moisture and then for added measure put some straw on top as well. Hopefully this will help keep the garden from drying up to much. In this small area I have onions, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and celery.

  11. It was a bit pricey but I wanted to make it because I liked the look and most likely will remake my whole garden with these type of raised beds because I am lazy and do not like to bend down and plant haha For those wondering this is good way to fill your raised gardens without using as much soil. It is called Hugelkultur Style Raised Bed. I did this and then added soil that her neighbor had dug out the bank he was clearing. I asked him for a couple buckets worth which I used about three or four wheelbarrows of it. Then I added mushroom compost and then a big bag of potting soil mix with fertilizer. When I plant the beds I will update with pics and also how well it or does or doesn't produce. The only issue will be keeping the soil moist. We will see how this will work out. Before putting the bed in place I took a mattock and removed the top layer of grass and then laid down some weed barrier cloth. Stay tuned! Edit. well it seems to have started my pics from last to first. Oh well.
  12. i agree with lavender. This year my garden is doing terrible. There has been to much rain. I am sure most have seen the peppers pics I have posted the last few years. my garden is sad looking this year. I have lost a lot of plants. Even my celery looks like crap. My soil is perfect so it has to be all the rain we had. We haven't had nice slow steady rain it has been torrential downpours
  13. http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/dont-miss/euthanasia-drug-found-in-dog-food-already-blamed-for-one-doggie-death Euthanasia drug found in dog food, already blamed for one doggie death (FoxNews.com) - A nightmare became reality for Nikki Mael when her five dogs began acting strange minutes after digging into a can of Evanger’s pet food on New Year’s Eve 2016. The Washougal, Washington resident and her family raced to the vet’s office, where Talula the dog soon passed away. “They were falling over. They were running into the walls. They were convulsing,” Mael told ABC7 of the horrifying incident. “Nobody should have to go through what we went through. I would give anything to see Talula again.” Devastated, Mael sent the remainder of the Evanger’s food to a lab for testing, where it was discovered that the dog food contained traces of pentobarbital, a lethal drug most commonly used for the euthanisation of dogs, cats and horses, ABC7 reports Though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) bans pentobarbital in animal meat for animal or human consumption, pet food consumer advocate Susan Thixton told the outlet that tragically, such substances often end up in pet food. “Pet food violates federal law, is openly allowed by the FDA to violate federal law, billion dollar a year companies are making profit selling illegal adulterated products to unknowing consumers in the US every day,” Thixton said. Taking action into their own hands, ABC7 partnered with Ellipse Analytics to independently investigate pet food for traces of euthanasia drugs. After testing 62 samples of wet dog food from over 24 brands for pentobarbital multiple times over several months, just one brand repeatedly tested positive for pentobarbital with sixty percent of samples coming back positive: Gravy Train. Manufactured by Smucker’s owned company Big Heart Pet Foods, the line also produces Meow Mix, Milk Bone, Kibbles’n Bits, 9 Lives, Natural Balance, Pup-Peroni, Nature’s Recipe, Canine Carry Outs, Milo’s Kitchen, Alley Cat, Jerky Treats, Meaty Bone, Pounce and Snausages pet foods. Though People magazine points out that it is not clear how pentobarbital made its way into Talula’s meal from Evanger’s, Smucker's announced Feb. 15 that it is voluntarily recalling shipments of Gravy Train, Kibbles ‘N Bits, Ol’ Roy, and Skippy dog food over pentobarbital-related concerns. “Veterinarians and animal nutrition specialists, as well as the FDA, have confirmed that extremely low levels of pentobarbital, like the levels reported to be in select shipments, do not pose a threat to pet safety,” Smucker's spokesman Ray Hancart told WebMD. “However, the presence of this substance at any level is not acceptable to us and not up to our quality standards. We sincerely apologize for the concern this has caused.” Evanger’s did not immediately return Fox News’ request for comment. As the FDA continues to investigate the pentobarbital issue, it’s wise for pet owners to throw out any pet food affected by the product withdrawal. In Talula’s memory, an online petition urging Smucker's to recall all dog food and only produce products that meet the same legal health standard as human food currently has over 58,700 signatures.
  14. Anyone else notice that spiders this year are out of control. I have seen huge spiders in my garage with bodies the size of quarters. It is time for some peppermint oil. Hopefully that works along with the traditional method.
  15. Had this fellow trying to climb a tree in my front yard. It is a popular tree. I have posted in the past the Mother Racoon and her babies she raised in in one year and then the next year it was a family of affiliated woodpeckers who made their nest there. This guy could not climb very well he only made it about ten feet off the ground and then came down and went about his way.
  16. I did not really do anything in my garden. My wife planted it. I just tilled it up a bit not to shallow this year and put the plastic down with her help. I put the stakes in for the tomatoes and other than that I really wasn't to involved. I just did not have the desire this year. The tomatoes turned out great and they are very big for the variety and should make excellent spaghetti sauce. The peppers are good. I also have pics of celery. I believe I have 14 stalks of them. The one tomato plant has around 30 tomatoes on it.
  17. yep I would say they are deadmans fingers. I saw a group of mushroom hunters at Mcconnels Mills park yesterday and thought of your post. So I checked out their facebook page and saw someone mention deadmans fingers and I thought bingo. I see that Petee already identified them which i figured she would.
