Guest snellma
Does anyone know what would make the top colored part of the bromeliad turn brown?

lavender
Depending on the type of bromeliad the top colored part is often the flower. It eventually turns brown and dies. In the case of some bromeliads this is the end of the plant as well.

Bon
What is a bromelaid? An American tropical plant. Pineapple and Spanish Moss belong in the bromelaid family. They are really neat looking plants.
Petee
Even without the flowering part the leaf part of the plant can still be beautiful. I've kept them for several years past the flowering stage.

I'd cut it when it gets ugly. Some bromeliads will put out shoots after they flower and the main plant dies. Some will flower again. Depends on the type.
