  1. Another source of confusion: Moon flowers. Devil's Trumpet is sometimes called Moon flower and so is a vine called Moon Flower. They all have similar flowers that smell good. All three together: Brugmansia, a small tree, flowers hang down Datura, a small shrubby plant, about two foot tall, flowers point up Ipomoea, Moonflower vine, it's a vine! :-)
  2. It just goes to show that you can't always trust a nursery card. Here are a couple of links that might help with the situation: http://www.arhomeandgarden.org/plantoftheweek/articles/angel_trumpet_11-4-05.htm http://anthrome.wordpress.com/2008/06/22/solonaceae-datura-metel-devils-trumpet-zombie-cucumber/
  3. That flower could have come from either the Brugmansia or a Datura. They look the same. However, Datura, Devil's Trumpet, Jimson Weed, is about 2 foot tall, reseeds outside, and has the seed ball that is pictured, and it is highly toxic to children and pets. It's flower looks like a trumpet held up from the Devil. They will bloom in one year. Brugmansia, Angel's Trumpet, is a tropical house plant that usually lives in a pot, gets up to 8-9 foot tall over the years, and has flowers that point down from the Angels. They do not usually get seedpods but are started from cuttings. They take a couple of years to bloom.
  4. I should have a ton of it to sell at the BUDS plant sale next May. I'm having a guy come with a small backhoe and lift the whole thing at one time. Then most of it will be potted up and one small section will be returned to that spot. If anyone has potted perennials to donate then just let me know.
  5. Two DAYS AGO i had about 50 big tomato plants potted up to share with those who lost their crop. Today they all have the blight. I'm guessing that tomatoes will sell at an unheard of price this fall. Treasure them if you got 'em!
  6. Marbek, you may want to sidedress your corn with a good dose of 10-10-10 wherever it is still small. Also, try some Epsom Salts on your peppers at about 1 tsp per plant. With all this rain rhe fertilizer gets washed out and you need to feed more often.
  7. Dip those males in batter and fry them.....once they've done their job of course! :-)
  8. I still have about 30 tomato plants of varying sizes, some with tomatoes on them. Some are free and others are a donation because of where they came from. If you have lost your tomatoes then a couple of these, well fed and watered will still give you some good table tomatoes! E-mail me at cshenkle@verizon.net or call 371-3322.
  9. Yes, the Courier did a great story on it. I cut it out. Thanksm Dubed!
  10. I've seen some of the larger older grasses begin to grow in a ring with the center empty but I imagine it's because the soil is exhausted there. Dig then first thing in the spring before they start to grow and divide them. I've never seen any really get out of hand. The ones on the embankment need dug out and reset with fertilizer because they are simply too old and the soil may have also built up around the crown. But otherwise they almost live forever! I don't think there's an ornamental grass I don't like.
  11. Well, one tomato plant bit the dust and another has spots. And yes, they both came from stores. I should have stuck to the ones I grew!
  12. They are Indian Pipes. http://www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/indian_pipe.htm
  13. It's even more reason to buy from local growers! Those backyard plants can be nicer and your money goes back to the community!
  14. Ugh, we'r all going to starve to death or die from chemicals!
  15. The entire top rotted out on my Husky Red Cherry tomato and the rest of it looks questionable. It looks just like the picture with blackened stems and leaves. My daughter from Portage said they had an announcement on their news that there is a particularly nasty tomato fungus on the rise. This may be it.
  16. Treasure Lake needs to work on a deer management plan that includes heavier hunting and clear cut strips in the back side of the lake. That will allow browse to grow and will draw deer to it instead of to the salad bars at houses. The tall tree cover in the empty lots keeps deer feed from gorwing. When there's a house some of the trees get cut. Tourists who just have to see a deer can take a drive into the real woods to find one.
  17. You may want to try layering newspaper all around under your plants. Sometimes the diseases are splashed up from the soil onto the lower leaves when it rains so if you eliminate that problem you may eliminate the disease.
  18. You got it! I've always thought it wasn't hardy around here but when I searched it, it is hardy in zones 4-8. Hot Dog! Another mystery solved. By the way, you have my favorite bug on your avatar! Before I finally found out what they were I called them flying lobsters!
  19. Nope, this is a perfectly heart shaped leaf. I need to take a picture. I was coming through Big Run today and saw it on a porch on the right side of the road on an old house. It's on the Sykesville side of Big Run.
  20. I've been trying to find out the name of this vine for many years! I found it at two homes here in DuBois (one on W. Weber and another on Long Ave) but neither occupant had any idea what it was. One elder woman said she thought she had once seen a bean pod on it but the other elder woman said she has never seen any sort of a flower or seed pod. Her vine was over 40 years old. I did get cutting which may or may not root. The vines have been used in the three homes I've seen it for the ends of porches as sun screens and privacy screens because you cannot see through it. It gets to 10 feet as far as I can see and the mature leaf is approxin=mately 6"W and 8" long....bright green. I'm going to continue to check the ones at both locations for any insignificant flowers through the rest of this year. Any ideas?
  21. Heck, you can even slice open a bag of potting soil and stick the tomato right in it. As long as they get water and food they aren't fussy. However, if the container gets too hot it can cook the roots so put some bricks or a couple of sticks under it for air flow.
  22. TL needs to start a deer habitat program. They've let the trees crowd out all of the undergrowth to the point that there is only deer feed at the homes where the sunlight reaches the ground. They could do a strip cutting program at the rear of the lake and create the proper feeding situation. That should draw the deer away from the houses. Then with a judicious hunting program they should have fewer but healthier and more beautiful deer.
  23. I relocated almost 77 before I lost count a few years ago and we still have a million of them.
  24. Store them in My Pictures on your computer in a file where you can find them. Resize them to about 2 inches?. Start your message and inctead of clicking post, click More Post Options. Click Browse which will allow you to browse through your stored files till you locate that picture. Then just double click on it and click Post at the very bottom of the message screen.
  25. They multiply like rats so if you have a bunch now, you will have bunches next year. Dump a little D Con down each hole. I hate to do it but otherwise they will destroy everything.
