So if something like this was happening at where you work and the crew walks off because they feel it's unsafe you would let them keep their jobs?

I understand your point, and I would be right behind them, but no, they would lose their jobs. I wouldn't need a union to take care of me, I would leave because the company didn't care about me. It's not even a union debate, and I can't get into that because I have no experience with them. Those are just my personal feelings

  2. I plead with the employees to make a stand over this. I know some of you guys are reading this thread, and the opportunity is slipping away. I'm just some guy on the internet, what I say goes only so far, and I can't say too much for fear of my job. You guys were there, you know what happened. This is not right. Decisions were made that led directly to that disaster, and even if Mr. Pierce's family gets a settlement for millions of dollars, where does that leave the rest of us? This isn't a local issue, this is a nationwide issue, and you guys are in the spotlight for a brief time. You guys could make some noise that would affect change for all of the rest of us. I understand why you don't speak up, I have mouths to feed, too, but what are you defending? Just Google "landfill slide". It's just a matter of time...

Investigation looking into sludges as part of Greentree landslide

On Tuesday, another spokesperson provided additional details, saying, “Blending sludge material and solid waste was supposed to be part of a regular procedure for receiving sludge at the landfill. However, during the course of the inspection, it was determined that the procedure may not have been followed for every single delivery of sludge material, and/or the procedure may not have been correct.”

Ok, so define that procedure? If I wanted to floor in an entire cell with sludge, there is nothing but common sense stopping me from doing that. What percentage of sludge is too much to maintain a stable working face? How many tons of trash have to be available to mix with X amount of sludge? What do you do when it's raining and the sludge coming in doubles? What do you do when you are sliver filling an outside slope, where you can't put sludge?

The simple answer to all of those questions is to set a limit on how much you can take, but when a government office makes a vague statement about "improper handling" after a fatality, then there is nothing these companies will change. They can just point at Greentree and say "They handled it wrong, won't happen to us".

I'm just so disgusted by all of this, I thought it may bring about change, but it looks like it won't happen

We pay for OSHA, but I don't expect them or any other agency to prevent all deaths no more than an alarm on a resident will keep them from falling or being strangled in a bedrail. I hope their is a monetary judgement.  I hope that the people who were negligent are fired and face criminal charges.   Nevertheless, garbage will continue to be collected and disposed of, and accidents like this will continue to happen as long as the financial punishments are so embarrassingly small.

I think Fed's point is that there will be a large financial consequence that no one will ever hear about, and sadly he is probably right. It will be settled for millions of dollars quietly, and nothing will change for our industry...

This is a good article that explains the purpose of a rain flap. Rain flaps are built by the contractor doing the new cell construction. When trash is placed in a new cell, the rain flap is removed and the new gravel and pipe are connected to the existing system. If the rain flap isn't removed, then the leachate collection system in the new cell is useless, there is no way for the liquid to make it into the system. It would be trapped in place

I don't either. It didn't seem like much of a fine for a serious offense, IMO.

Takes about 2 hours to bring that much money in...

I really think I need to leave this site. I think Fed is the only person that knows how far I stuck my neck out to make noise about this. For $12K...

I'm so pissed that if I say what I really want to I'll lose my job.

Is there any chance DEP will push harder? That investigation is ongoing

Has anyone seen the price of new and used trucks lately. Wow

When I see prices of 45,000 on new ones and that's one of the middle of the road ones I think wow. Used truck prices for something with over 100,000 miles on it for 20,000 thats 7 years old and 3 year old ones for 35,000 well thats just to darn much. I make good money but I wont throw it away. Looks like I may just do a complete resto on mine and save between 15,000 and 40,000.

I think I bought my last big truck at the perfect time. I bought a 2009 F-250 King Ranch with 49K miles on it in 2012 for $36K. When I saw the new 2017s on the road, I looked up the King Ranch price online. $85K :shock1:

I know the emissions regulations drove the price of the engines up by about 15%, but good lord, there's no excuse for a 3/4 ton truck to cost that much money. The only good thing about that is that with my truck still having under 80K miles on it, it's worth almost as much as I paid for it.

I know that there was a previous topic on this, but I just can't find it.

Anyway, I saw this on WJAC tonight, not much info at all. But the PA DEP investigation continues.

I hope that everything is exposed.

You know that Steve brought over the "search" function from the old site, right? :duh:

Or, you could just always search the threads that Steelnut started

Thanks for the boost!  I love the little black girls.  They're sweet and so much more friendly than the older girls.

They must have been bred for disposition for years. I've never had chickens that were this calm and friendly. Even the great majority of roosters are very passive. I'm very, very happy that I went with this breed

For the very first time, the little girls put themselves to bed in the coop for the night!  I also got 4 eggs today from 4 hens.  Things are looking up.

That's a major milestone. I always feel like the job raising them is complete when they make it to the coop on their own :D

Those girls should start laying around October, and you'll love those eggs.
