Guest Tracy96
I planted some hostas last year. They are starting to come up but in the center of one of the plants is an ant hill. How do I get rid of the ants without killing my hosta??? Those dang ants...LOL
lavender
Get a pyrethrine based insecticide. Pyrethrines come from plants. Or use a bait type poison that the ants will eat. Try mixing boric acid with something sweet like molasses or honey. Right now you could very easily move the hosta with no damage.
Guest Tracy96
Thanks Lavender! I think I'll try an ant trap. I don't want to move my hosta b/c it's part of an arrangement with other plants. It would look strange with a bare spot. I used toro in my house before to get rid of ants and it worked great! I also liked it because it's safe for children and pets. I never thought of using something like that....maybe it didn't occur to me b/c the ants are outside...LOL
lavender
Right you are! It is better to start out with the least invasive method and work your way up to the big guns. Or at least I think so.
Petee
You can also set out little applesauce cups of sugar mixed with Boric Acid powder.
Bon
Terro also has the granular stuff to put outside to kill ants.
Guest Tracy96
Terro also has the granular stuff to put outside to kill ants. Thanks! I didn't know that. I just have the liquid toro.
mosha
We have lots of Hostas and for many years have sprinkled them with a granular mix containing Sevin. No problems with anything. Also environmentally safe.
lavender
I use Sevin on my broccoli and cauliflower so it should be safe for hostas.
badmonkey
We have used the liquid version of terro placed on a small piece of cardboard near the hill. We try to place it outside when it isn't supposed to rain for a few days. Thanks! I didn't know that. I just have the liquid toro.
