steelnut
I have flower beds and they desperately need to be thinned out. When should it be done, in the fall or spring or now? TY!
lavender
Depends on what you want to do. If you are just digging out plants and want to toss them you can do it now or anytime. The season for dividing plants depends on the plant. Most perennials and grasses are divided in the spring. Bulbs and peonies are divided in the fall. You can toss any extras our way. I'm potting for the spring plant sale. Bon

old farm boy
So am I correct in assuming that hostas should be divided in the fall. I have quite a few that have become medium size bushes!! Would like to transplant along a shady tree line. Any hints on how to divide will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
Bon
I just dug mine up and broke them into smaller sections. Hosta's are one plant the can take a beating!!
lavender
I'm with Bon. You can pretty much divide hostas anytime. It is a lot easier to divide them in the spring when there are no leaves to deal with. You will probably have to cut off the leaves to divide them any other time. It won't kill them but they will use up energy producing a new crop of leaves.
