The Truth Behind This Pennsylvania Mystery Was Revealed After 25 Years
DAULPHIN, PA., NOVEMBER 18, 2015-------No one in the town of Dauphin knew where it came from or how it arrived: in 1986, a statue of Liberty replica appeared on a piling in the middle of the Susquehanna River, off of Route 322. Traffic on the highway stalled from people who pulled over, slowed down, or stopped altogether to peer at the strange new landmark.

Though no one knew it at the time, a local lawyer had created the statue to celebrate the actual Statue of Liberty's centennial celebration. He created it out of venetian blinds and plywood, and with a group of friends he erected it in the middle of the night.

Though the statue's origin remained a mystery for years, eventually the creator came forward and revealed himself. In the 1990s, the original statue was destroyed by weather. By that point, the residents of Dauphin had grown so fond of their miniature Lady Liberty that they raised enough money to build a new one: a larger, more durable, more securely-fastened version. The second Lady Liberty is the one that remains to this day. She stands 25 feet tall and greets all who pass through Dauphin. Check out the video below to learn more details of the fascinating story, and see more of her.

Here are some potato's that we pulled up so far. They started on their own in the garden and we just left them grow. There must have been a few from last years garden still in the ground. Probably about 3 to 5 pound there are a few big ones. Probably should have waited to pull them later but we wanted to see if we had any and wanted some to cook up here this week. If we were going to keep them we would have put them in the basement where the temp is just right to harden the skin.

A few are purple potato's also. I am kind of anxious to see how the bin has been doing.

Lots of hemlocks are dead around here. They look terrible. I don't understand why homeowners don't cut them down. They will not come back!! Cut them down & you will up your property value if you are trying to sell.

I tried the bags and we put them quite a ways away from the garden, they only seemed to call in more beetles
They're seriously driving me crazy, I can't stand any crunchy beetle.

The Hotel Emery is long gone along with most all historic buildings in Falls Creek.

...With the construction of a two-story brick store and residence built by Mr. J. L. Reed to spur grown, other homes quickly followed and the town was named Evergreen. A large, four-story hotel, the Lamontague, was erected at the corner of Main and First Streets and provided porches with easy seats from which to view the crowded streets each night. Until it burned down nearly a dozen years later, the Lamontague was the center of activity for the community. Two other hotels served the town during its boom days, the Emory on Main Street and the Casey House on Taylor Avenue. It was not until 1890 that streets were laid out and tree stumps finally cleared from the land. A few houses and stores stood along the street lines, but in rainy weather, rubber boats were required to reach them...

I always just cover veggies but it is nice to hear about someone who has some practical experience with this at the local level. Lots of theory out there anymore but little in the way of actual down to earth information. The old gardeners are passing and a lot of their information is going with them. Thanks!

Oh, and I had this last frost/freeze go right through the coverings. I guess if the material touches the plant the likelihood of it freezing is higher. Buckets work better if the plant is small enough. I saved the lilies but the hostas are a mess.

We didn't get up early enough on Monday to spray, but hubby did on Tuesday morning. Our fruit trees are too far away from the house for the hose to reach, but he has a huge spray thing that he filled with water over and over again and sprayed them down. We'll see how it goes, here's hoping!
In years past we sprayed down veggies in the garden early in the morning to save them and it always worked.

Finally after a six month winter, my flower beds are alive and beautiful, thank you God!  I was feeling like it would never happen, but everything is finally coming alive, the fruit trees are so full of blossoms, it just makes me so happy!
