  1. Its clear up on top of the hill , there is a road called the wigwam (I think) follow it up around to the top of the hill, the house sits on top.
  2. With the last weeks storms and trees that fell, another one was lost in front of this house again. There was 4 now 2 are left. Both end ones are gone now. Weird... Last year took one and now again last week.
  3. I don't know where these people are buried but, I saw an obit in the paper this past week and the lady was born at the "Ben Carson homestead" so I assume the Carson family lived on or near the carson hill area of Luthersburg. Maybe they are in the Luthersburg cemetary, need to take a ride out and search the cemetary.
  4. I brought this up earlier about the community service that people have to do for school and also for court recommended service, it is a great idea plenty of kids have to do this to graduate and the cemetary benefits as well.
  5. The sign is beautiful they put up today... Wonder if there was ever one before, maybe a long time ago when the wrought iron fence was still around the cemetary. anyhow it looks so nice now that sign is up....
  6. I see no one has written anything on this thread topic since July, I am wondering why it couldn't be used as a project for people who need to do community service. Like people on probation ( even if not better juvenile probation), these kids could do general upkeep of the grounds like weedeating, mowing, etc. and it could be counted towards their service. It is in our community and really with its location, needs upkeep all seasons.Just to walk up that way in the winter, no one takes care of the shoveling of the Main st. sidewalk out front of it. I don't know who would be the one to contact, if anyone knows about who divies up community service jobs and a contact number post it please.
  7. I am looking for a couple of old books written by a lady named Helen Hughs(Hughes) not quite sure of last name spelling. Probably Elk Co. but, maybe in old estate sale stuff or yardsales, I may have luck, but thought I'd try and see if anyone one here might know of a copy The name of the book is "Looking for Ephraim" which is supposedly an account of one of my great great grandfathers trips looking for his grandfather Ephraim Morey,.Or could be Journals & Letters of Pioneers of Elk Co.Moreys came from Mass. and settled in Bennetts valley. I am also related to the Weed family of Weedville name, and am looking for a copy of the Tozier family book (Ridgeway historical society has one)it has info on Frederick Weed family in it. Any help locating one of these rare books would be appreciated.
  8. P.M ed you what I know. Also want info on the Carson family from Carson Hill. Salem,Pa. am currently reading Mr. Ray Kriners book of the area and am learning some from it.
  9. Me too. Does anyone live there? Like a lot of this towns historic buildings they are either in disrepair or already gone, because no one ever did anything to preserve them. Its probably way too late for the wigwam.
  10. The 3rd pic is down in the flats by coopers. Drive down by the 2nd pic by that church ( the houses are all gone from the pic) but, the church still stands, keep going down street and look back from behind Kurt Johnsons toward Cooper treads you'll see the back of this building in the 3rd pic.
  11. How much longer did the old indian live Rich? Now I'm curious. I love when you add something new, I wait. Cool to know that he was at St. Catherines its right up the street from me. I can picture him and the Major driving up there and how the congregation felt to see them at church, wouldn't it have been a sight to see?
  12. I would guess either 1963 also, but am happy to see the pic. I love this stuff look at the old 219 sign. Its hard to picture parking out front of that building today, there would be no way. Everthing looks laid back and so late 50's early 60ish.
  13. right now its snowing like crazy so, think a white winter instead.
  14. LOL This was the best rip roaring laugh I've had in days, I just gotta know did Snickers swing by and touch it??? My side is busting a gut from this thread!!!!
  15. Well according to the paper thanks to local teen Ryan Sprague the circle looks like it did in this picture on this thread, great job to who all were involved. also they are having a community clean-up next week at the cemetary Tues. and Wed. evenings from 6- dark. This is a great thing to try to get it spruced up for Memorial day. Anyone willing to help clean up on those nights that can bring lawnmowers, weedwackers or just helping hands are encouraged to come out. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is sponcering it I guess. Excellent for all those go-duboisians who said they would help out if someone could start something. Nows the time. I will be there, this is the oldest cemetary in town and really needs fixed up. Hope theres a great turnout. Come on history buffs lets get involved.
  16. So would I . I can see it from my porch, love the cobblestone wall surrounding the porch. I hope the fence will be fixed they've been working on it all week doing something I don't know what though. At least the downed tree is cut up and gone.
  17. The wrought iron fence at the Hahne house has been damaged by a gigantic tree that fell yesterday during the storm. Its a very old tree and very old fence. What a beautiful house and grounds old Frank had looking over his brewary. Too bad it couldn't have been saved. I hope the fence can be fixed.
  18. I'll have to go take a look is it really bad or what why can't you believe its the same house?
  19. Are these last pics of the fireplace recent? Its a shame it looks like that in there if they are. 42 Long ave. hmm!! Where is that? East or west long?
  20. I just read the whole online bio of M I McCreight and it says he is buried at Morningside. The wigwam was a very important place in our history here and it really needs to be preserved if at all possible. For all this man did for this town its a shame there is not more to commemorate him.
  21. This is an excellent link Rich00. thank you for sharing it where do you come up with all your info? Its very interesting. Also love the saving the wigwam idea, but didn't someone on this thread already say the current owners don't no what they're gonna do with it? So someone must live there right?
  22. Rich00 I can't get the link to work .
  23. Well do you have any memories or photos you could post for us too look at then? How interesting . I have read books by him and find him a very important part of this towns history.
  24. I just walked up past there, the best I could see without going up in with my dog is the circle sure dosen't look much like that anymore what a shame. The cannonballs are gone, how they were all heaped up in the picture. I was in there last summer and don't seem to remember them there then either. Its too bad no one ever took the time back then to care for the stuff it might still have been there today.
  25. I miss the old days of listening to Charlie Moore going on about the Bundys and the Duttrys, haven't thought about that in years. Jennie Dixon is the author. I was getting her confused with Aunt Katie Shaffer from out by the lily pond at morningside cemetary.Jan Nichols books at the library explain a lot . I own both volumes.
