Need some help identifying

Just at a guess, as I have trouble identifying plants from pictures, but I'd say it was some variety of wild amaranth. It was a pain in my veggie garden when I first started it but it is all gone now so I can't go out and compare. You can eat it.

 

The picture might be a different variety but it is close.

If need be you can drop a sample off after Wednesday I can get an accurate diagnosis for you.  It doesn't look like something you would want to let go to seed in your garden!  Don't put it in your compost either.  It looks like it might be something that should be burned or sent to the dump in a closed bag.

Yeah, common names are like that. Different people, different parts of the country and one plant has 10 different names or 10 different plants have the same name. The taxonomic names are a little better but they keep changing them and there are a number of different systems. Plant people hardly ever know what they are talking about.  ;)
