One of our treasured Veterans at DuBois Village Personal Care, Bernell Schaffer, was honored on the 11th for his service as one of the oldest Veteran residents, (a young age of 89) at the DuBois VFW. His family also attended this very special service. Thanks, Bernell for all you have done and for who you are today.

SPECIAL EDITION ARTICLE #1 - November 17th, 2022 by Fr. Ben Daghir One Thing, Jesus Christ
This article is a special edition for "One Thing, Jesus Christ." Fr. Ben Daghir recently attended the Notre Dame vs. Navy football game. He, along with his friends, were very motivated to see the thousands of young people who have dedicated their lives to service and mission in the Navy.
ARTICLE: I recently had the opportunity to attend the Notre Dame vs. Navy football game in Baltimore, Maryland. I went to the game with some friends that I had studied with at St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Baltimore.
The experience motivated my group of friends and me (all of us are either priests or are studying to become priests). As a result, I would like to share what exactly motivated us in our priestly vocations.
We saw thousands of young individuals dressed in their Navy uniforms. We watched as these Navy service men and women marched into the stadium and out onto the field.
We saw young, dedicated and inspired people. The jumbo screen often showed the members of the Navy in the stands laughing and cheering. The jumbo screen also displayed their ages: 18, 19, 20, and 21 years old.
These individuals from the Navy have set aside their private plans and have embraced a much greater call in life. They have let go of selfish ambitions to join a far greater mission. They have embraced obedience and service in a very radical way. They have focused on purpose, tradition, sacrifice, and mission. They see themselves in a much larger story than their own narrative.   And, based upon their smiles and laughter, their commitment to the demands of the Navy has not limited their freedom but rather unleashed it. In fact, they strike me as very happy people.
One of my favorite moments occurred during the second half of the game. We watched as roughly a dozen young individuals took “The Oath of Enlistment” from the United States Secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro. These individuals stated, "I, (name), do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."   These words reminded me of the promises that I made as a priest to the bishop. I promised to discharge without fail the office of the priesthood. I promised to exercise the ministry of the Word worthily and wisely, preaching the Gospel and teaching the Catholic faith. I promised to celebrate faithfully and reverently, in accord with the Church’s tradition, the mysteries of Christ (especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation). I promised to observe the command to pray for God’s people without ceasing. I promised to be united more closely every day to Christ the High Priest. I also promised respect and obedience to my bishop and his successors.
This Notre Dame vs. Navy football game reminded my friends and me of a great verse in the Bible, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). The Navy men and women had no idea that their witness and commitment were motivating us to be greater seminarians and priests. They had no idea that they were challenging us to return to the core of our vocation as a priest: like the bread which becomes the Body of Christ - to be broken for others, like the wine which becomes the Blood of Christ - to be poured out for others.

Members of the newly controlled Republican House on Thursday announced an investigation into the Biden family business and whether President Joe Biden is compromised by the family’s business schemes.
Conspiracy or defrauding the United States
    Wire fraud
    Conspiracy to commit wire fraud
Violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act
Violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
Violations of the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000
    Tax evasion
    Money laundering
    Conspiracy to commit money laundering
“I want to be clear, this is an investigation of Joe Biden,” Comer stated. “The Biden family’s business dealings implicate a wide range of criminality from human trafficking to potential violations of the constitution.”
“In the 218th Congress, this committee will evaluate the status of Joe Biden’s relationship with his families foreign partners and whether he is a president who is compromised or swayed by foreign dollars or influence,” he said.
We are also sending letters to the Biden administration and Biden family associates renewing our request for voluntary production of documents relevant to this investigation,” Comer continued before stating Joe Biden lied about having knowledge about his family’s business dealings.
“This is an investigation of Joe Biden, the president of the United States, and why he lied to the American people about his knowledge and participation in his family’s international business dealing schemes,” Comer said. “National security interests require to conduct an investigation and we will pursue all avenues – avenues that have long been ignored.”
Comer then listed a number of crimes that members of the Biden family may have committed, according to uncovered evidence by House Republicans.
“These include conspiracy or defrauding the United States, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, violations of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, tax evasion, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit money laundering,” Comer said.
We find evidence that Hunter Biden and Joe Biden were involved in a scheme to try to get China to buy liquified natural gas,” Comer said. “People are in outrage over China buying farmland in the Dakotas. What about China starting to buy into our American energy industry?”
Joe Biden and his staff have claimed at least seven times that the president has not been involved in the family business, yet more than 17 pieces of evidence suggest Joe Biden has played an influential role in his son Hunter and brother James’s activities.
Fifty-eight percent of voters believe that Joe Biden has played a role in his family’s business dealings. Sixty percent say Hunter Biden has sold “influence and access” to the president.

Article 6 - November 14th, 2022 by Fr. Ben Daghir

Toby Keith is famous for his catchy American lyrics. One of his songs from the early 2000’s has become prophetic.
The song is entitled “I Wanna Talk About Me” and depicts a man who is tired of hearing about his significant other’s extended family, work, friends, dreams and much more.
Here is the popular part of the song, “I wanna talk about me, wanna talk about I. Wanna talk about number one, oh my me my. What I think, what I like, what I know, what I want, what I see. I like talking about you, you, you, you usually; but occasionally, I wanna talk about me.”
I could not think of a clearer mantra for today - “I wanna talk about me.” In the spiritual life, things go haywire the moment one’s focus selfishly turns inward. St. Augustine called this incurvatus in se (being caved in on the self). Humanity’s greatest weakness has always been when it caves in on itself.
The Italian poet, Dante Alighieri, in his work The Divine Comedy depicts a scene when he enters the depths of hell. He sees Satan flapping his wings in a hell that is frozen. Satan is stuck in himself, consumed in his own little world, and the devil doesn’t even notice when Dante is in his presence. The devil’s mantra is obvious - “I wanna talk about me.” Dante’s point about hell is also evident - hell caves in on itself (incurvatus in se).
What does the Biblical tradition teach us about incurvatus in se - the “I wanna talk about me” mentality?
The Bible is not interested in the boring narrative of self-promotion, of how I made myself, or of how I define myself. It has zero time for the “me, myself, and I” mantra. We see the exact opposite of the incurvatus in se (“I wanna talk about me”) mentality in the Virgin Mary.
The Angel Gabriel greeted Mary and stated, “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus” (Luke 1:31). Mary is troubled, but she does not consume herself in her own wants and needs. Instead, Mary is open to God’s grace and responds, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Mary’s entire life is open to new horizons, new possibilities, and a new adventure. Such is the beauty of life when one is not caved in on the self.
Next, we read of a beautiful encounter when Mary greets her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth says to her, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:42-44). How, then, does Mary respond?
Mary gives praise to God, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord” (Luke 1:46). Mary then continues to praise God because He is a merciful and strong Savior who remembers His promises. Mary talks about God, not herself. The incurvatus in se - “I wanna talk about me” mentality is nowhere to be found.
The contemporary story of “I wanna talk about me” in which I am the author, I am starring in it, I am in control of the plot, I decide which characters are or are not in my story, etc. is not that interesting. It is a boring narrative that is excessively told.
On the other hand, the story of salvation in which God is both present and active is something worth talking about. In fact, we ought to talk about God much more than we do.

FIX IS IN: Arizona Ballots Make Stop at Runbeck Printing Company to Scan Ballot Envelopes Before They Are Sent to County — WITH NO OBSERVERS

Arizona Ballots Make Stop at Runbeck Printing Company to Sort Ballots Before They Are Sent to County — WITH NO OBSERVERS

Every mail-in ballot that is returned in the county is sent to Runbeck first.
Runbeck is scanning the Maricopa ballots before they are sent to the Maricopa County Elections Center.

Maricopa County  is the only jurisdiction in the country that picks up completed ballots at USPS Processing Distribution Center, but doesn’t bring them back to the election department or tabulation center.
Maricopa County picks up mail-in ballots and takes them directly to its print vendor Runbeck Election Services, which is headquartered in Phoenix.
Every single completed mail-in ballot, whether mailed or dropped off at a polling place, goes to Runbeck. All mail-in ballots collected on election day, and the previous few days, are sitting at Runbeck headquarters. Maricopa has no idea how many ballots are in their possession because the ballots are at their print vendor.
Maricopa allegedly uses Runbeck because they have “high-speed scanners.”  Runbeck scans the ballots in batches to create a digital image of each envelope signature area. This batch of images is given to the Maricopa tabulation center (MCTEC) for poll worker review.  MCTEC notifies Runbeck if any of those signatures don’t match.  Runbeck separates out those bad envelopes, then delivers both sets of these envelopes by van to MCTEC, which is 6 miles away.  MCTEC then opens the envelopes and starts the tabulation process.

This “batch” process is repeated until all “mail-in” ballot envelopes are scanned at Runbeck.  This takes 10-12 days after every general election, and ballots envelopes are delivered each day by Runbeck vans.  Runbeck uses the Bluecrest Vantage mail processing machines to scan these ballot envelopes.  This machine can process 40-50,000 ballots an hour. These machines can also automatically scan the ballot signatures using embedded commercial-grade check cashing signature software from Parascript.  But Maricopa continues to use its slow manual “batch” process of reviewing signatures.
These Vantage machines cost $1.06 million each, Detroit just purchased one in early 2022.  Maricopa could purchase two of these machines and process roughly 90,000 ballots an hour in-house. But Maricopa continues to re-sign contracts with Runbeck, which prevents them from bringing all this in-house.
    This is a travesty.

Meals on Wheels driver extinguishes fire, saves consumer’s home
CURWENSVILLE, Pa. – Joe Lenhart became the newest Meals on Wheels and More driver for the Mature Resources Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging in October, and he wasted no time finding opportunities to go above and beyond his duties.  One day, while still learning his route and training with a veteran driver, Bob, the pair pulled into one of their delivery stops and immediately noticed there was a fire burning in the home near Mahaffey.
“We got there, Bob went to the door, and there was smoke coming out around the door,” Lenhart recalled.  “We touched the knob to make sure it wasn’t hot, then opened the door.  Instantly, black smoke just started pouring out.”
Luckily, Lenhart is a volunteer firefighter with Curwensville’s Station 8 Rescue Hose and Ladder. His training automatically kicked in.
“I made entry, it was so dark with black smoke I couldn’t even see that the kitchen light was on until I was halfway back to the kitchen,” Lenhart said. “I discovered a stack of firewood in a rack that was on fire right next to the wood stove, and it had spread to the rug on the floor. I can only guess the stove must have thrown a spark and started it. Just when we got in there it went up. The flames were fueled by air coming through the open door, and it just took off.”
Opening the door was a necessity to get access to the house and to begin letting smoke out, but now Lenhart knew he had to act fast. He said, “I grabbed the entire rack of firewood and ran outside with it. Then I got two big bottles of water out of the van and ran back in and put the fire out on the rug. I didn’t know if it was enough water to fully extinguish the fire on the rug, so I rolled the rug up and took it outside. While I was doing this, Bob called 911 and got the fire department on the way.”
The pair then went back into the house to check to see if the residents were inside.  Fortunately, they had left to go and get their flu shots, and the house was unoccupied.
“If they had been in there, say sleeping or something, they’d be dead of smoke inhalation,” Lenhart explained.
A resident of the home, referred to here simply as “Ernest” expressed his gratitude to the drivers who saved his home. He said, “I really hand it to these guys for helping me that day the way they did. It’s a blessing to have them, and a blessing that they do all the things they do and don’t even want anything in return. Thankfully, we’re ok.”
Meals on Wheels Fleet Dispatcher Joshua Bush commended Lenhart, saying, “Each driver has been in a situation where they have needed to call 911 for medical assistance, but in my time here, I don't remember a driver ever needing to call 911 for a fire at a consumer's residence. Fortunately, that day Joe, who is a firefighter for Curwensville, just happened to be on the right route on the right day. Joe was able to quickly search the home to see if anyone was inside and while doing so was able to extinguish the fire, saving the consumer's home and belongings. Each one of our drivers has stories about how they were able to help someone while delivering their meals, and as their fleet dispatcher, it makes me proud of each one of them. They are a great team of men and women who love to help others.”
Lenhart has already experienced other emergency situations during his short time delivering meals. As Bush indicated, it can happen frequently. Aside from the fire, Lenhart has discovered two different consumers who fell in their homes as he made deliveries. Following protocol, he called emergency medical personnel and waited with the consumers until help arrived. One man had broken a hip and had been laying on the floor for two days over the weekend. Lenhart remembered the man told him, ‘I’ve been waiting for you to come.’
Bush further explained, “Our Meals on Wheels and More drivers are doing more than just delivering meals, they are also the agency's eyes and ears. They get to see and interact with our consumers on a daily basis, and they also check up with our consumers to make sure they are doing well. The drivers have been able to summon help on numerous occasions where they have found a consumer not feeling well, or a consumer has fallen and is in need of medical assistance. As a driver you just never know what may happen as you are delivering these meals.
“Being a Meals on Wheels and More driver is rarely ever the same from day to day. Having that ‘more’ part in their job description kind of leaves it open for just about anything. It could mean that you might be delivering company mail between different facilities, or maybe transporting a company vehicle from one place to another. You just never know what is going to come up. So, as a driver you have to be prepared for pretty much anything and everything.”
Lenhart added, “Any time you can help people in any way, it feels gratifying. You have to give back to your community.  And all of our drivers feel that way. All of them care about the people we deliver too. They get to know them. It’s something great to be a part of.”
The Meals on Wheels program typically provides 700-800 hot, nutritious meals each day to consumers in Clearfield County. The AAA contracts with Morrison Living, an international food service provider, to supply the meals that are prepared fresh in the kitchen at the agency’s Curwensville office each day. In addition to hot meals, each year Blizzard Boxes are packed and delivered to homebound Meals on Wheels recipients across the county. A combination of nonperishable foods, they are packaged and delivered at the onset of winter. Consumers are encouraged to store the meals in a safe place to use as a backup for stormy winter days when the Meals on Wheels staff may be unable to deliver a hot meal.
