  1. THANK YOU

You used to be able to access a trail immediately across 119 from Murray's Ford, which goes past the concrete pump house for the Sykesville water system.  I believe WW Equipment sits on a portion of the trail now, but the trail will take you up to 322 a hundred yards or so behind Sheetz.  There was also a pond along the trail and the entire area would be ripe for the new GoDuBois Metal Detector group.

    Thank you !
Yes---it was a 1939-completed project of the WPA......
For the first 6 years it was called "DHS Stadium" by the local paper(1930-35)……….
In the 1940s-50s the local paper nicknamed it the "Beaver Bowl"...…….

Will keep searching.....appreciate your help !

Made a call to somebody who's  Uncle played in the 50's.  They think it was called "Beaver Stadium".  I was thinking on the lines of Dubois Vo tech Stadium since the school was in the stadium. They also thought stadium was originally built by the  government Civilian Conservation Corp. Hopefully thats accurate and helpful.

Do the first for the enjoyment of local history, and if it moves you, do one for money!  Back when this thread first started, while killing time in a hotel room, I read a John Grisham novel by the name of "Callico Joe".  The book was not in Grisham's normal lawyer style, but was a fictional work written around factual sports figures.  In this case it was about baseball players from the late 70's to early 80's, and ignited memories I had forgotten.  My point is, Grisham took a book of sports figures & facts, then tied all together around a fictional character.
But back to your original idea, it sounds very interesting and one I would definitely buy.

Many municipalities are having one company perform trash services because of mandated laws that became too expensive for the local government to provide.

There were also many other job related deaths in Pennsylvania in 2017.

A 119-year-old shipwreck has been found at the bottom of Lake Erie.
The wooden steam barge Margaret Olwill sank in 50 feet of water during a nor’ester in 1899. Eight people died, including the captain, his wife and their 9-year-old son.
The National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo announced the discovery on Thursday.
“It was a major disaster back in 1899 when it sank,” shipwreck hunter Rob Ruetschele said, according to The Toledo Blade.
Ruetschele, a member of Cleveland Underwater Exploerers, said he thought he found the Olwill in 1989. Sonar later showed that what he had discovered was a heap of rocks near a sunken tree trunk.

“I dove in the night I found it,” he said, according to the paper.
The Olwill was hauling 900 tons of limestone to Cleveland when it sank.
The four survivors clung to floating wreckage and were tossed by Lake Erie’s waves for hours, Fox 8 Cleveland reported.
One man was described as “more dead than alive” when he was rescued, according to the station.
Rescuers tried to save another man but he was too weak from exposure to grab a rope that was tossed to him and drowned.

I was reading the old 1887 Courier at the library recently-----it was a weekly paper.   I will make a point to put a picture of the paper articles on here, when I can get back to it.   I had an extra hour yesterday because sports practices were cancelled,

Those fair grounds & race track we had were pretty special, it seems.....

Most area citizens do not know that DHS had a rifle team in the late Depression Era.  It was a good team that rarely lost.   It had an even greater challenge finding other high school teams than we do today, and they were willing to travel 2 or more hours to compete, although we had our own range.  Most of the time the DHS team competed in prone position only, but the first time they went to standing position they still won.

Does anyone recognize one of these 6 members of this early DHS squad??

On this date 128 years ago the town of DuBois was destroyed by fire. June 18, 1888 is considered the day that organized fire protection was established in DuBois giving birth to what is today the DuBois Volunteer Fire Department. Around this time every year we celebrate the area with Community Days, followed by Firemen's Week to commemorate the Great Fire of 1888 and the establishment of our fire department.

I am extremely disappointed that any accredited university would waste it's time and money even considering such idiocy.  For 50% of the price I would have been happy to have given the same results.( that I was aware of for the last 60 years.)     Good grief.

conservativeman633 got a reaction from Pompeii in 1905 DHS
While reading a 1905 "Morning Courier" from DuBois I ran across the very first track meet to every happen at DHS.  It was at the Driving Park in May.  we won.   The hammer was thrown. No Javelin or discus.   The "running broad jump" event went 19 feet.  The "running high jump" went 4' 11.5 "  The pole vault went 8'  1"  The Athletic Association" at the school put it on.  The coach was "Bob" Reed.  Our biggest winner was a "J. Harrington" who took 4 firsts.  Schools attending were DuBois, Reynoldsville, ridgeway, and Clearfield.  DuBois scored 58 out of a possible 101 points.  "Patchell" of DuBois won the mile in 5:38.  Harrington threw the shot 35'
By 1906 all the locker rooms were at the driving Park, and the teams would celebrate with a dance at the pavilion there, after the meet.
