But is there a way to get a small branch that got ripped of a dogwood to reroot?

Apparently, it is qute possible. You might want to look up hardwood cuttings vs softwood cuttings. If the branch has been around for awhile I would take a fresh cutting. Here is the procedure.

Dogwood: How To Grow a Dogwood Tree From a Branch
Like every other tree propagation process, a Dogwood tree from a branch must be healthy to propagate successfully. It also needs to be at least 12 inches long and has a diameter of about 1/4 to 1/2 inches.

The cutting angle is also 45-degree, and all the leaves or buds should be removed from the lower half of the cutting.

The rooting hormone will stimulate root growth, and you can plant the cutting, moist and well-draining soil away from direct sunlight.

  6. Nope not going to watch it. Even infants know what a woman is. It's a given like water is wet. I like to keep an open mind but there is no point in trying to convice me that water is not wet. As far as I am concerned people are welcome to mess with their own bodies as much as they like but it doesn't change their chromosomes or my mind as to what  a woman is or man for that matter. To misquote a wise man, "You is what you is."

  7. The Down to Earth Garden Club spring plant sale will be held on Friday, May 19 from 7:00am-5:30 pm and Saturday 9:00am-12:30 pm. We will be at BMP (Business Machine Products) 1263 Maple Ave. (Thanks to Jeff who lets us take over his parking lot each year.)

The plant list is currently up on our web page at www.downtoearthgardenclub.org We will update it as more plants come in but there are always last minute arrivals that don't get on the list.

Prices are by pot size. You are getting that $20 day lily for whatever the price of the size pot we can fit it into.

    2”-3” $2.00

    4”-5” 4.00

    6”-7” 5.00

    8”-9” 6.00

    10” and up 7.00

Proceeds go to support the Club’s projects in downtown DuBois. These include the DuBois Library, the City Building, the Pershing Parking Lot and the Reitz Theater. The group also plants and maintains the tiered butterfly bed and the small raised beds on the Beaver Meadow Walkway in addition to a butterfly bed at Parker Dam. Help is also available for individual or communal projects. Stop by and say hi!

This is small potatoes compared to the money that allegedly is gone!

Oh, I agree and I am not the one who made it public. Who was that I wonder? We tried to deal with it discreetly and in a reasonable manner on our own with very poor results (it was capitulation or else) and then went to the owners of the property   I do reserve the right to defend against slander. We are not all that happy with the current regime in the city. They have done things that have made us very unhappy and we have a real whopper of a problem with them right now. Yes, we are using "cooperation" not "competition" tactics.  The day they say we can't work on the project(s) we are currently doing we will cheerfully desert them all and find something else to do. It can't be to hard to find something to do when we provide all of the labor free and also fund the projects. We are fools by any definition.

I guess those without sin can cast the first stone! Sounds like sour grapes over the flowers. Weren't the Garden Club asking for volunteers because the group was small and older members? She has my vote!

I didn't listen to what Jen said but I have her rather viscous emails where she admitted removing spring flowers from the pots and disparaged 26 years of hard work on the part of some dedicated volunteers. Volunteer who did what no one else would do free of charge plus having bought all the pots and plants. We have tens of thousands of dollars in these areas over the years.   Also the police report of her harassment. Want to see them? Maybe our budget for each area?

The Beautification Committee has 2 members Eddie Tate and Jen Jackson. This came from the interim director of the Downtown Group. Are they going to take over the care of the City Building, the library and Pershing Lot and the 4 beds on the walkway? DTEGC might be on the small side because we ask our member to work, but we have quite a few more members than that.  What if we take our "sour grapes elsewhere? Those areas would be overgrown with weeds in 2 months. We would have welcomed the help if she had asked. She didn't.  We stay out of politics but anyone who would attack a group of volunteers who have asked for noting and have given so much of their time to beautify the community is pretty low. Proof in writing. I have it. Opinion isn't fact.

Oh, and if anyone is saying that we do a lousy job check the pictures of the beds on our facebook page.

The much disparaged Pershing Lot on which we do such a lousy job.

I am not fan of the project however, I do have a few suggestions to make what was done more palatable:  first, there are too many disconnected/not similar textures.  Perhaps what was painted on the center wall, could be painted on the bottom and top walls, to give similarity of color?

Next, I do not see how a waterfall fits into that location!  Isn't there supposed to be a stream feeding the falls and catching the water at the other end?  Anyways, maybe to make a bit less fake/contrived, moss or lichen can be encouraged to grow on the rocks?  Maybe a huge vat of plain yogurt could be spread to encourage that growth (I know, it may or may not work)?

The sign at the top?  Just plain out of place!

I think that a lot of what you are suggesting will happen with time and weathering. Anything new like that stands out like a sore thumb. Mother Nature may take care of in a few years about which time the weeds will be considering a coup d’état. I do agree that there is something discordant about it. I can't figure it out. You are right but  part of it, I think, may be that you have to look at it so closeup. It needs distant viewing and a background other that prim and proper housing. A mountain would be nice.

So they can step in and take care of something as simple as flower planting?  Isn't that sweet of them?  Glad they can uphold their duties. I find it a joke doubt they'd have even helped out if it were someone else creating  the supposed problem.

You may of course believe what you wish but this started 2 years ago before any of this other stuff went down. The situation elevated to the point where it was considered harassment. The emails were very unpleasant and no volunteer group that has served the community for 26 years should be subjected to that sort of treatment. There may be justifiable complaints against the city administration but in this case they put an end to a situation that was untenable and had a group of dedicated volunteers very upset. The Pershing Lot and the library both are city property and the city has the right to decide who tends them. I don't think that many people would be very happy if someone came into their yard and took plants out of their pots and put in what they chose.  The entire fall display on the lot was systematically destroyed this year a couple of weeks after it went up. Despite efforts at establishing a cooperative arrangement with the dear lady the city stepped in as a last resort. Over 20 years of free labor should entitle a group to some respect.  You may not like something but that doesn't give you the right to destroy it.

Oh, and there is nothing simple about flower planting in the city beds. It is grueling labor often done in hot weather, cold weather and a couple of times when it rained or snowed. Mulch is heavy and some of the large pots have to come in in the winter for snow removal. One person isn't going to be able to take care of it and said person wasn't willing to work with anyone. But believe what you wish.

According to a Facebook post this morning, Jennifer Jackson spoke about the planting of flowers downtown for the City each year.  Last night our fine City Council voted she is not permitted to plant flowers in the parking lot at Luigi's this year.  Things that make ya say hmmmm?

There was a good reason that this occurred. Jen was removing plants that were put in by the group that has been taking care of that lot for over 20 years. She was planting pots that belonged to another group.  She was asked to stop doing it, or at least coordinate activities. She acknowledged the request but didn't follow up and continued to do it for 2 years before the city council took action. Just to set the record straight. In fact she made life miserable for all concerned thus the city council stepped in.

Can't seem to edit this without it duplicating. Nor can I get rid of it!

☞Today in Texas History -- On today’s date 94 years ago, Thursday, January 17, 1929, the popular spinach-eating, Native-Texan comic-strip character known as Popeye the Sailor Man first appeared in print in the “Victoria Advocate” newspaper of the city of Victoria in Victoria County, Texas.
☞The Popeye comic strip, originally known as “Thimble Theatre,” was created by noted American cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar (1894-1938), who called the “Victoria Advocate” Popeye’s “home town.” In gratitude he contributed a special cartoon for the Advocate’s historic 1934 anniversary issue. Speaking to the newspaper’s editor through Popeye, Segar wrote, “Please assept me hearties bes’ wishes an’ felitcitations on account of yer paper's 88th Anniversity... Victoria is me ol’ home town on account of tha’s where I got born’d at.”

  15. It would be very interesting to see what the law says about mandatory education in DC. Most, if not all, states must provide education up to the 12th grade for all children. If they toss them out of public schools what alternative are they going to provide? Everyone has the right to refuse medication even if it results in death. I see the lawyers circling the wagons.

  16. Jokes on me! :pound:I just looked at this and was going to make a comment about people who couldn't keep the nominative and objective case of pronouns straight when writing. It drives me me crazy. If I read  between he and I once more .......   Although I see it doesn't matter any more since pronouns seem to be as slippery as gender. I think I'll just start using X chromosome and Y chromosome individual. I know that is going to insult some who can't deal with what God gave them chromosome wise  but to misquote Popeye the Sailorman, "You is what you is." Let the grammar police and those that have problems with biology  deal with that one.
