Governor Wolf Signs Animal Cruelty Prevention Bill
June 29, 2017 12:21 am· HARRISBURG, Pa. – Governor Tom Wolf yesterday signed the animal cruelty prevention bill at a public celebration surrounded by advocates and members of the legislature.
Act 10, House Bill 1238, was introduced by Rep. Todd Stephens, and updates and clarifies the existing animals abuse statutes and increases the penalties for abusing animals.
“I am proud to sign the Animal Abuse Statute Overhaul into effect today, strengthening the penalty for animal abuse and neglect in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” said Governor Wolf. “Today is a day of celebration for all Pennsylvanians, and animal-lovers everywhere and I am proud to be a part of the true collaboration that helped make this landmark legislation a reality.”
    The overhaul bill includes:
    – mandatory forfeiture of the abused animal to an animal shelter if the abuser is convicted
    – stipulations to dog tethering
    – increased protection for horses
    – civil immunity for veterinarians, veterinarian technicians, and humane society police officers to prevent frivolous lawsuits against these professionals when reporting animal cruelty in good faith
“Today we are sending a clear message that Pennsylvania will not tolerate animal cruelty in our state and will punish offenders to the fullest extent of the law,” Rep. Stephens said. “This is the most comprehensive animal protection bill in the Commonwealth’s history and would not have been possible without the determined efforts of my colleagues in the House and Senate, the Governor and the thousands of advocates who contacted their elected officials expressing their support for the bill.”
“The story of Libre’s shocking mistreatment and miraculous recovery helped spur a broader discussion of how we can better protect animals,” said Sen. Rich Alloway. “The result is a bill that not only toughens penalties against abusers, but also spells out the kind of treatment that is dangerous and unacceptable. Our pets are part of our families and depend on us for their care, so it’s far past time that we ensure abusers face a punishment that matches the heinous nature of the crime.”
“Governor Tom Wolf’s signature today on House Bill 1238 marks a new era in Pennsylvania,” Rep. Ryan Bizzarro said. “Act 10, which takes effect in 60 days, is literally a new lease on life for the animals that depend on us for care, comfort and compassion. “Act 10 will help put an end to instances of torture and extreme neglect that are too rampant. Our animal friends deserve better.”
“The passing of House Bill 1238 is an historic legislative step toward protecting the animals of Pennsylvania from abuse and neglect. We applaud the Pennsylvania General Assembly for their wisdom and actions in humane leadership to move this legislation forward to Governor Wolf to sign into law,” said Kristen Tullo, Pennsylvania State Director, Humane Society of the United States. “Animal advocates from across the state and country deserve much credit as they joined forces in support of this legislation to make a difference toward passage of the bill.”                                                                    http://www.explorejeffersonpa.com/governor-wolf-signs-animal-cruelty-prevention-bill/

HARRISBURG -- Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf will sign legislation strengthening laws against animal cruelty and neglect in Pennsylvania.
The state Senate unanimously passed the bill Tuesday, two months after it passed the House. It would establish grades of violations up to a felony for intentionally torturing an animal or for neglect or abuse that causes it severe injury or death.

State law currently makes animal abuse a felony in certain situations, such as animal fighting or repeated and severe abuse of cats or dogs.
Dog owners also would be subject to punishment for tethering in certain situations, such as if the animal has open sores or the owner has used a tow chain, choke collar or similar devices.
Sen. Rich Alloway calls it the most significant changes to Pennsylvania's animal abuse laws in more than three decades.                                                                                                                       SEE TWEET'/;   http://wjactv.com/news/state/pennsylvania-toughening-animal-cruelty-neglect-laws

Many years ago I bought a peach colored, variegated brugmansia at Longwood Gardens. It is the first one. It isn't a particularly robust plant but it blooms periodically with the peach colored flowers fading to white as they age.   A couple of years ago it threw off a green "sport". We are always advised to take these off or they tend to take over the plant. Sometimes they are desirable variations and that is where we get a number of unusual plants. I couldn't bring myself to throw it away so I rooted it. It finally has bloomed. The buds are yellow and they open to a white flower with a yellow tint. It is a faster growing much sturdier plant that the parent. Something interesting when the snow is flying!

HARRISBURG, Pa., JUNE 3, 2015 (AP) ------- Bills to restrict tethering of dogs and other animal protection measures are moving forward in the Pennsylvania Legislature.
The state Senate on Wednesday voted for a bill that would prevent people from tethering their dogs in severe weather or when it would deprive them of food, water and shelter.
They're also approving bills to prevent serious Dog Law violators from running kennels with another family member's name, to impose more serious penalties on people who harm animals in the context of domestic violence and to protect horses from cruelty.
The proposals are now in front of the state House for its consideration.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    http://www.wjactv.com/template/inews_wire/wires.regional.pa/2942dd9b-www.wjactv.com.shtml#.VXA5V7B8OUm

I know you have all missed my sick sense of humor.  So I did a quick web search and came up with this:

"I find Bald Eagle tastiest when cooked just as you would cook duck ala orange. The orange sauce off sets the wild flavor, and let's face it, ducks are pretty small birds and hardly worth the effort to cook them. A good sized bald eagle will easily serve a party of eight to ten people. Just make sure you extend the cooking time from the duck recipe.. I would say at least 5 to 6 hours at 350 if fresh. If frozen thaw in refrigerator overnight. Serve over a bed of wild rice."

One tree, 40 types of fruit

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, AUGUST 7,2014(CBS/AP)---------Ideas don't grow on trees, until now.
Syracuse University Professor Sam Van Aken is the proud father of a single tree that grows 40 types of fruit. The artist's rendering of his creation is getting attention worldwide, CBS News correspondent Jeff Glor reports.

Artist rendering of The Tree of 40 Fruits Courtesy of Sam Van Aken
"It's flattering. It's amazing. But yeah, it's overwhelming," Van Aken said.
The art professor grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania. A few years ago, he learned New York's agricultural experiment station -- a 125-year-old institution that preserves and produces fruit -- was going to rip up its stone fruit orchards.
So he set out to find a permanent home for seeds that trace back thousands of years.
"When I started, it was a matter of essentially collapsing an entire orchard down onto one tree. That was the practical application for it."
The result is not an entire orchard in one, but "a couple orchards in one."

Tree of 40 Fruits CBS News
The tree contains 40 varieties of peaches, apricots, cherries, nectarines and European plums that date back to the 17th and 18th century.
Growing multiple stone fruits, like peaches or plums, on one tree is possible because what Van Aken does, perhaps better than anybody, is graft.
In essence, he tricks a tree into adopting a new limb, or in this case, dozens of them.
The Tree of 40 Fruit has been growing for nine years. Fourteen are installed around the country, most in public places, like Van Aken's at the center of the Syracuse campus -- alive and edible.
The professor says his project has grown beyond expectation.
"There's a pastor in Norfolk, Virginia that did a sermon," he said. "And a big part of the sermon was using The Tree of 40 Fruit as a symbol. And to me, that was amazing that it reached that far."
Van Aken acknowledges the biblical implications of his tree.
"I mean, the tree of life; it's the beginning of a story," he said.
But if nothing else, the tree is pretty fascinating food for thought.
"I saw somewhere on a website where somebody said that the Tree of 40 Fruit will end world hunger," he said. "And it's like, 'No, it won't. Not at all.' But what it can do is, I like to think, that it can lead to that type of thinking."
