Saw him out at Shaggers. A crow flew into the tree he was at, so he flew to the little pond.

I dug out half of my bed of asters a couple of days ago. Somebody took about half a wheelbarrow full. She doesn't know the work she just bought herself!
I've still got a lot of winter kill to prune off. I'm an optimist but I think some of this stuff is really, truly dead.

If you want to see elk forget the viewing areas. Ride around and check people's yards. I'm sure the local residents could tell the PCG what elk eat. I can tell them what deer eat.

Like! Like! Found the tag to my mystery yellow peony that I got on sale for $7. It's Canary Brilliants http://www.swensongardens.com/intersectionals.aspx  It was bare root and probably won't bloom for a couple of more years but the leaves are very delicate with a blue cast and pinkish borders.
Forget the rich hubby. He'd probably want to see receipts. Just haunt the plant sales.

It worked! I've been growing this great wildflower to identify it, which I finally did last summer when it bloomed.  http://www.mywildflowers.com/searchflowers.asp?mode=identify&pf=&fshape=fform%3D%27fused%27&height=3&bloomsize=BETWEEN+0.75+AND+1.25&color=white&month=6&form=&leaf=entire&cluster=long&itype=flower

Itoh is a Japanese name. He is the fellow who first bred this type of peony. It is a hybrid of regular peonies and tree peonies which has the bush form but stronger stems and some of the more unusual colors of the tree peonies.

It's all this rain that has caused problems with veggie plants this year.  Roots need some oxygen in the soil. Saturated soil can't hold oxygen and root development is curtailed. Poor roots cause wilting, yellowing leaves, leaf drop and many other problems. I had wilting in my peppers this year and very poor root growth in the broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Some of the plants made a comeback as the root hairs grew back but some of them were too far gone to make a recovery. If you never had a problem with tomatoes before and are having yellowing, poor fruit development and wilting this year the problem is more likely too much rain rather than problems with the soil.
The blossoms also have to be pollinated before they produce fruit and all the rain keeps pollinating insects from flying although I believe tomato blossoms self pollinate. They however do not pollinate if the weather is too cool.
This may explain why some tomato plants carry few tomatoes this year:  http://gardening.wsu.edu/library/vege016/vege016.htm

I had a yellow trillium bloom in my garden this spring. I planted the root but really wasn't expecting it to grow as it isn't a native and wildflowers are often tricky to grow outside their native habitat. It was a nice surprise.

The flower was more yellow than my picture. I think I waited a bit too long to photograph it and it was starting to fade. If anyone is interested its story is here http://downtoearthgardenclub.org/2013/05/yellow-trillium-trillium-lutea/

I always just cover veggies but it is nice to hear about someone who has some practical experience with this at the local level. Lots of theory out there anymore but little in the way of actual down to earth information. The old gardeners are passing and a lot of their information is going with them. Thanks!

Oh, and I had this last frost/freeze go right through the coverings. I guess if the material touches the plant the likelihood of it freezing is higher. Buckets work better if the plant is small enough. I saved the lilies but the hostas are a mess.
