lavender got a reaction from steelnut in The Second Yellow Peony
Here it is Bon. I posted Bartzella peony last summer. I bought a big pot for an outrageous price (for me anyway) and it did bloom the first year. Later I picked up a single dried up root of Canary Brilliants from a sale table and after 2 years it has bloomed. It has a lot more pink in it than Bartzella. It is more apparent in the bud. The rain has messed up the shape but the buds are all kind of squished. The first picture is of Bartzella, the second of Canary Brilliants and the third of the bud.

lavender got a reaction from steelnut in Fiddle head ferns
Drive up over Clearfield mountain. You can see tons of ferns from the road. I don't think that there is a particular type of fern that you fry up although I suppose some are better than others. I have the interrupted ferns in my garden and they are just about a foot high now and haven't opened out yet. Watch for ants. Fiddleheads always seem to be full of them.
I'd love to see a morel. Been picking mushrooms for many years and have never seen a morel.

lavender got a reaction from Bon in World Naked Gardening Day May 2, Mark Your Calendar Now
Hey Bon, shall I throw the greenhouse open to anybody who shows up naked? Last I counted there were 800 plants in there and not one prickly pear. (They are housed elsewhere.) Special price to the nudies? Sort of a naked pre sale?
PS Those rose of sharon are huge.
PPS Do not show up for the regular plant sale naked. Jeff (BMP) won't like it...........or maybe he would.

lavender got a reaction from dyna99 in Strawberry plants
This explains how to plant them for maximum yield. http://extension.illinois.edu/strawberries/growing.cfmIt is the way I was taught to plant them.
When the mother plants stop yielding you can just roto-till them under and let he runners fill in.

You would only dig them up to separate them if they became too crowded. If they eat the daffs they are dead deer. Daffs are poisonous. We had someone come back with the tale that something at the Lake ate off either her monkshood or helebores, I can't remember which. We were duly amazed as both are poisonous and therefore are pretty much critter proof. We later found out that a dead deer was found near her house. Let the critters beware!

lavender got a reaction from steelnut in Need gardening help for my poor day lillys!
I'd say leave them alone. Daylilies usually take care of themselves. If the leaves are just yellow they may not be dead but just haven't developed cholophyl
yet. If they were under snow or mulch they could be experiencing chlorosis. This will clear up. If the leaves are dead they will wilt and disappear.
Why take the chance on cutting back living leaves when it isn't necessary? I just went out to look at mine and the deer have eaten them all
down to the ground so I couldn't say what the tips looked like.

Yep, I have some buds left, but with this cold stretch coming, we'll see what happens....

Funny, I always find that daffs are sturdier than crocus. We are getting more cold weather, which is a shame as the spring bulbs were the nicer this year than they have been in a long time.

Buckets or large pots work best. They provide an insulated air layer and don't squish the plant. You can also leave them of for a couple of days without doing any harm. Plastic is indeed harmful. Better than nothing, I guess but I wouldn't use it. I don't cover much anymore. Too much work. I just put my tomatoes and such out later and the ornamentals have to shift for themselves. This is from someone who once got out a ladder and blankets and tried to cover a dogwood tree. Guess I'm getting old.
PS Lungwort is blooming too. That is another good spring bloomer even if it isn't a bulb. And is spreads but not aggressively.
