In February 1977 our road looked like that picture on the right.  The township had to bring a front end loader out to clear it because the snow was too deep for the township plows.  I was pregnant and they had snowmobiles ready to either bring help or take me out to the hospital.  I got out but only had two hours to spare till I had my son.  Close!

Actuslly yes. I would rather see them in someone's freezer than in their car with a dead body under an elk. Sorry, they are not native and they need to be kept on the reservation. Those who brought them here need to be responsible for them and the damage they do.

My van has been in the body shop for over two weeks now because of a deer. I asked the guy what happens when an elk hits one? He said they are generally totaled. Yep, nice little elk....get a gun!

The key would be enough of the correct light, a cooler temperature since they have already fruited and are temporarily going to rest for the winter, enough humidity to keep they from drying out and sufficient soil to support the roots while not letting enough water accumulate around them to allow root rot.

Great experiment!!  Get some really good grow lights and put it right down about an inch from the tips of the plant.  Then run them for about 18 hours a day.  You can put a table in the basement with a remote thermometer and a hygrometer to get the moisture and temperature right.  You can also get a light meter to measure that depending on how much you want to invest into the experiment.  If your basement is too cold then you can tape some plastic like a tent around the lights to raise it a bit.

Heavensent is going to drop off some Osage Oranges for people to try when dealing with spiders in their house.

Research says they don't work but users swear by them.  I know they will stink if left in place for too long.  Toss them if they look like they are getting bad.

After Thursday stop by Charlie's Alternators to pick up what you can use.  I'll have a box there to take some from.  Bring a paper bag of something to put them in.

I attended classes and demonstrations on all three days of the Mother Earth News Fair and found some really neat stuff.

One of them is the Scarecrow, a motion activated animal deterrent that hooks to a hose.  If an animal gets within 20-40 feet it shoots out a blast of water that startles the animal.  It runs for 6 months on a single battery.  It was $20 at the fair but I'm not sure how much it would be elsewhere.

I still make them all the time and I add whatever is extra in the fridge like bits of soup, steamed veggies, mashed potatoes, corn, etc.  There's always extra so I leave them in the fridge and they disappear.

I think it was said "tongue in cheek" and the Amish do hold their food dear so maybe a meatloaf did make a difference.

Unfortunately the Game Commission has nothing to do with the major destroyers of gardens.  Many diseases and insects were brought in by shippers.

Master Gardeners is becoming even more important those who grow gardens because of all the problems.  We can provide a spring to fall program of protection.  All you have to do it ask at 849-7361.  You name the pest and we'll provide a good solution.

My personal solution to elk is make them into burgers when they stray off of the reservation.

This affects Walnut which is a major wood crop in Pennsylvania.  The Ash was the last major loss.  Hemlock will be going too as the Hemlock Wooley Adelgid spreads.  Most of these are invasive diseases and insects.

If you call the Extension office in Brookville, 849-7361, they will have a Penn State Master Gardener diagnose your trees for free.  You can get info in person, by e-mail or by phone, your choice.  It's a free service from Penn State.

This is one of the best articles I have read on the benefit of supporting the unseen fungus that is what really makes a plant grow.  Don't kill it with chemicals or overtilling, feed it!
