Anytime I cut anything I dip the knife in the bleach so as not to carry bacteria from one plant to another. If no one is looking I toss a bit of the diluted bleach on the cut stem. No reference for the latter but what the heck.
You do know that if you crossed a weed with a tomato plant you would get the worst of both plants and it would grow all over the yard and be impossible to get rid of. They have crossed a tomato and a potato though.  I looked up how to do it once but never tried it. One day when I get some time.

Things are picking up a bit. Broccoli has developed soft rot which means few side shoots. (Keeping a jar of bleach in the garden.)  Cauliflower is OK but the heads are small. What cabbage that didn't get root rot from all the rain is doing fine. All summer squashes and cuckes are just starting to develop. Plants are a bit retarded. Kale was great and a new crop of lettuce is just starting. Got beets for the first time in 5 years. I switched types and used a different fertilizer which may have helped. Corn looks great but tomato plants are small for this time of year. Green beans are just OK but yellow beans are stunted. Eggplant and peppers are doing great which is unusual. Onions and peas are doing well. Tomantillos and winter squash are super.
Parts of the garden just were flooded with all the rain and crops that don't like a lot of moisture weren't happy. Parts of the garden that drained better fared better. Weeds are happiest of all.

I think that once the beetles are in the bag they put out, free of charge, the same pheromones in the lure. There was this suggestion once that you collect various pests that were eating your plants, chop  them in the blender with some water, strain the resulting buggy mess and spray your plants with it. It was supposed to protect the plant from whatever bug you ground up. So, I gave it a whirl    I found that it attracted the critters. All I was doing was spraying the plants with sex pheromones. The bugs came in droves looking for the party.

Probably a good idea unless you want to annoy the neighbors who have fall allergies. It is the big offender.

The only way to successfully deal with weeds is to drink the gin until you think that they are beautiful.

He has my sympathy.  And I'll bet you will be pulling out plants from stray roots for the next 20 years.

Pink lily of the valley. This is the first year they have bloomed. I put them in about 4 years ago. I never did find the first batch I planted but these have done well. I didn't really think that they would be this pink. They are growing among white and blue forget-me-nots. There is some sweet woodruff in there and the very pink stuff in the back is dead nettle.

You can still start squash, cucumbers and things like that. You can also plant those seeds outdoors at the end of May. You might start tomatoes now and get them big enough to put out by the first or second week of June. They grow fast when the soil is warm and I've seen people around here put gardens in all through June and still get produce. It is probably too late for peppers and eggplant that take a long time to grow and cauliflower, cabbage etc. that have to go out early.
It is probably too late to order seeds. You can find organic seeds around here if that is what you want.
Heirlooms are sometimes disappointing if they are not adapted to the area. It will take a bit of time to see what can be grown. You didn't mention the age of your son but if he is young he might find that things like beans and lettuce more rewarding than trying to grow things that are a bit trickier.
I never think that this has to be said but a surprising number of people don't know it. You can't just grow seeds indoors without using the proper technique. You need sterile soil or medium to prevent disease that will kill your seedlings. You need lots of light or they will get tall and weak.
This chart looks about right for our area:

No single group did all the work that had to be done in this area on its own. Congratulations on managing to coordinate all the of the folks, including the city, that you have had working on this. Sometimes that is more difficult that picking up a shovel and doing what has to be done. It looks great!

The City of DuBois is very good to us. Every summer they give us summer kids that mow and weed eat 5 days a week, eight hours a day and we still can't keep up. Without the City of DuBois's help, we would be lost and Rumbarger wouldn't be looking as good as it is. The summer kids free up the board members  to do other projects. It's 8 acres big and there is so much to do there, we are never caught up. Every year we fill 3 flower beds with flowers, we fill 11 urns with flowers, we maintain the mausoleum and the landscaping around it and the Soldiers Circle. We re-cement knocked over graves, trim bushes, pick up trash, rake leaves and paint where needed. We are very grateful to the help the City gives us. Plus several of the City's employees have come up after work and helped us out on their own time. We are 8 volunteers and most of us work full time. The work we do at Rumbarger is mostly done after work and on weekends. The City of DuBois has been wonderful and we really appreciate all they do for us. City of DuBois employees Herm Suplizio, Steve Swope and Scott Farrell have been very instrumental in helping us get to the point we are today.
